Code sharing is set to take effect in the fourth quarter and covers flights connecting Miami and Atlanta to Buenos Aires, as well as service to 14 U.S. destinations, eight domestic destinations in Argentina, three flights to Canada and flights to Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay.

This new agreement with Aerolineas Argentinas is key to our strategy, and will help us solidify and expand our network to, from and within Argentina and will allow us to provide service to all countries in the Southern Cone," Delta President Ed Bastian said.

Starting in 2012, the airlines will also offer reciprocal benefits for their frequent fliers that include accrual and redemption of miles.

Aerolineas Argentinas is expected to join the SkyTeam global alliance in 2012, which will allow the carriers to provide additional customer benefits.

Great for AR and DL. I cannot wait to see AR's new livery landing in ATL! I think this plays into DL's plan to strengthen in MIA /Latin America.

Quote:
When implemented in the fourth quarter of 2011, the agreement will connect Delta's daily service from its hub in Atlanta to the Aerolineas Argentinas hub at Buenos Aires and beyond to cities in Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay. It also includes flights connecting Aerolineas Argentinas service from Buenos Aires to Miami with flights to 15 cities in the U.S. and Canada on Delta's network.

Is this agreement contingent on some level of competency AR has to hit ala AI and Star?

Interestingly, AR and AI are or were in a similar position, but their respective governments have had different affects on each. Where obviously AI has been arguably detrimentally affected by the government, AR seems to be making the right choices to get back on a path of profitably and sustainability. AR still has too many workers for the limited number of aircraft they have. But I hope AR can continue to improve and become a valuable member of Skyteam.

Well, we can all hope for the best, and one could argue AR has certainly tried to turn around its operations, hiring consultants, Oliver Wyman, new executives, etc. However, problems continue to plague AR, most of them associated with meddling from its shareholder, the Argentine Republic. Labor problems, market protectionism, operational meddling are only a few of the challenges AR faces today. There is no need to further elaborate as these issues have been extensively debated here already...

In contrast to AI, however, AR's operational systems and procedures, while perhaps not the best in the industry, appear to reach standards required by SkyTeam. One can only imagine AR was far from SkyTeam's first choice for South America. There are many innovative and entrepreneurial carriers in the region that do not need to rely on the state, unlike AR.

AR was the last meaningful dancer left on the floor and SkyTeam needed a partner. G3 is, apparently, not willing to make up its mind just yet...

Very true, Skyteam seems to have gone hard and heavy with China yet dropped the ball with India and South America. Michael Wisbrun even said in his one of his latest interviews that those were going to be his focus before anything else.

Even if AR shows up there, DL is by far a nicer airline. Ive flown both on 8 hour flights and AR had me longing for AA's ratty 763s.

Not to mention AR's "yeah, we're probably going there today" approach to on-time performance on many routes.

I think this is DL staging its move into MIA as an international carrier. Remember this thread that stated that DL is looking to open MIA-GRU and MIA-BCN? Do they code share with AM on MEX-MIA? AZ on FCO-MIA?

Rumour: DL To Launch MIA To BCN And GRU (by zhiao Jul 10 2011 in Civil Aviation)

Who knows, I know MIA is AA's fortress but it seems like there's room for another carrier. (Read WN and/or DL) DL already flies MIA to ATL, CVX, DET, LHR, LAX, MEM, MSP and JFK. Plus a lot of Skyteam carriers fly there too. Including the soon to be Sky team member AR.

Yes, DL does codeshare on AM's MEX-MIA-MEX flights?

Next flights: MEX-GRU (AM 77E), GRU-GIG (JJ A320), SDU-CGH (G3 73H), GRU-MEX (JJ A332).

I see this agreement as the chance for DL to run in the near future a JFK-EZE flight, once again, now with better chances.
First DL product in the near future, even the 763, will be a better one. Second, connections can help to satisfy a good load. Third, if AR and DL market the flight together, there's a very good chance that the joint operation creates the necessary yields.

New York + Rio de Janeiro = One of the best combinations !

I agree, would be a great idea. AA has the non-stop market JFK-EZE locked up for now and UA is routing EWR-IAH-EZE on CO or IAD-EZE on UA. ATL-EZE on DL for passengers from New York is annoying...

A code share could allow AR to market the route locally in Bs.As. and DL in the US.

Besides for the last 8 years or so there has always been two Domestic carriers offering a good amount of international service from MIA. UA pulled out around 2003 and AA has just taken over since. But I agree I think there is room.

Add multiple daily flights on DL regionals to TPA, MCO, DCA and seasonal to RDU.
