Went through Miami Wednesday the terminal is amazing and from what I could see most of the restaurants are open and there seems to be a lot of variety also FIS will be opening in October.

The terminal should be completely finished around November God willing. It is truly a remarkable terminal. Should really change the opinions alot of people have about connecting at MIA.

Really has changed a lot, makes MIA IMO one of the top airports in the country now. However the thing with MIA is a lot of people connect from international destinations. Going Domestic-International is not a problem but where the annoying stuff comes is going International-Domestic or even worse International-International and we will still hear plenty of complaints naturally just because the process really does suck.

That's great. Last time I was there ( a year ago this month actually), there were plenty of empty storefronts and it still felt empty.

Yup, it is. Impressive operation.

It already has! As I'm sure you know, most non-aviation people don't really pay attention to these things but I've asked several friends who recently travelled on American through Miami about their experiences and all said something to the effect that "it was a lot better than the last time I flew through Miami"

Yah, amazingly it is up there. I say amazingly because ten years ago I would never have thought so! It will be even better once the train to the Intermodal Center is complete.

Well isn't that because the FIS isn't open yet? I imagine that the new FIS in the North Terminal will make Miami one of the better international-domestic connecting airports in the country...Will the capacity be larger than the current Concourse E FIS?

Also any updates on airline movements?

Iberia, British Airways, and Air Berlin are all in E now right? Any ideas if/when any of them will move to D? Ditto for Lan.

Is BA the only other oneworld airline opening a lounge in D?

Yea I know. I remember around late 2004 or early 2005 was the first time I walked into the new D area there were only something like 10 new D gates opened, it just seemed awesome because I never saw an MIA terminal like it before. Now its just about finished it took long enough! As your right the intermodal center will be great and not just for the airport but for the whole city.

That will help the one in E is a bit small for not only AA but bunch of other international airlines. Having an FIS just for AA and OW will help a lot and make it better but still naturally with the clearing customes, rechecking bag etc.. It is still an annoying thing to do when connecting but something that has to be done.

I am not sure if IB or BA will move to D I am pretty sure they have lounges in E now. Last time I was in MIA about a month ago Air Berlin was still in F. I think LAN is happy with J but I think their move will happen when the new FIS opens since they bring in a decent amount of international pax of course.

I flew the North Terminal yesterday on an international flight and have some questions.

On the long walk from far-out in D to the Concourse E FIS, I noticed signs for passengers to take the SkyTrain to FIS. When the new D FIS opens, will arriving international passengers have a sterile skytrain option to transit to the FIS?! If so, I was unaware they were planning this and it's pretty cool!

Also, I cleared immigration on the third level of E and then descended to the ground level for baggage claim. Has that third level immigration station for US citizens always been there? I thought they were all on the ground level...

Yes. The new entrance to the new FIS in D will be at skytrain station 3 or around gates D29/D28.

Is this a seperate track and station? A seperate car? How will this work.

I also had these questions. I didn't notice any separate tracks up there...Perhaps the front or last two cars in each train can be made dedicated FIS cars at certain hours?

Will there be entrances onto the skytrain for FIS at all three other skytrain stations?

There are a separate cars on each train for the FIS passengers when it opens.

Next time you're riding the skytrain look back at the last car(s) on each train. You'll notice at each station there seems to be a car attached to the skytrain that stops behind the wall at the station. These will be the boarding areas for those using the FIS.

Interesting will have to take a look next time out of MIA.

Once the new terminal D FIS opens all the AA demand will move taking lots of the E FIS demand. With the new J FIS handling all the Star alliance and Skyteam traffic like Lufthansa, Air France, Delta, Taca and Avianca E will have little demand. For the first time in the jet era the E concourse FIS will NOT be the main FIS or only FIS station at MIA.

The E FIS will handle just E and F concourse international flights, airlines like Transaero, AeroSur and Virgin Atlantic.

Who knows if Lan/BA/IB/Air Berlin will move/remain in E or wind up in D...

It has definitely changed mine - the new MIA terminal is truly a world-class terminal befitting a major U.S. airline hub (which, after all, was really part of the issue to begin with, since MIA's former finger-like concourse piers were never designed to function as part of a single airline's massive connecting hub).

When I think back on what a horrific experience MIA used to be - especially when arriving internationally, and when connecting - the new terminal has completely changed the entire experience.

And I look forward to seeing what AA's and the airport's plans are for E - if previous discussion here on A.net is true, and they really could make some substantial headway on updating the aesthetics of that terminal (at least the low gates) for a relatively small investment, I hope they do it.

Years late, billions over budget, but the North Terminal really is nice - I cannot wait until the D FIS is done!

Unfortunately, it is still a less-than-ideal experience when arriving internationally and connecting. It will be a different world when the D FIS opens.

I'm still curious if anyone knows what lounges other than BA will be opening in D. And are BA, IB, and Lan definitely moving to D?

First time I used the E FIS was in 1995 and it was on the same place it is right now, third level of E. The flow was exactly as it is right now, you got out of the plane , took the escalator/elevator to third level, pass through inmigration at the same level then down the escalators or elevators to the ground level to pick-up your luggage and go through customs. 1995 was a couple of years before the North Terminal construction started, so I assume that was the original configuration to the E FIS.
Do not forget there used to be another FIS on the 3rd floor between Councourse A and B, that facility used to have inmigration and customs all together at level three.
