Delta To Open Airbus Domicile In Atlanta

From sources, Delta will FINALLY open an Airbus crew base in Atlanta. At the moment, there is a lof of 319/320/330 flying in and out of Atlanta. They've had to bridge crews from the former NW hubs since cross-fleeting began and they really ramped up flying of the type in Atlanta, all the while sending MD88s/737s to MSP and DTW.

My only question is, what took so long?

The first real priority was getting the A32X base in SLC off the ground while moving the MDXX pilot base off the ground. I think we'll probably see more bases opened/closed over the coming. Up here in SEA, where i'm based, our 767ER base is slated to open more positions for FO's and Captains in the next few months. Why? I'm not sure, but it either means a new route, or turning over some of the A330 flying to the 767

My question as well. The next question is when/if a DC-9-50 domicile opens in ATL. MEM still has one but sees so few -9s, while ATL has nearly as many -9s as MEM/DTW/MSP combined. Only thing holding them back I'd think is the -9s leaving the fleet.

Does DTW have a 737 domicile yet? I'd think that would have to be next on the list. End of the day, once all dust settles, I'd imagine the following:

ATL - 737, 756, 764, 777, M89, A32x, A330
CVG - anything? 30 mainline flights a day...
SLC - A320, 737, 756
NYC - 737, 747, 756, 764, M89, A32x
DTW - 737, 747, 756, 764, 777, M89, A32x, A330
MSP - 756, M89, A32x
MEM - anything? 30 mainline flights a day...
LAX - 737, 756, 777
SEA - 756, A330

MSP doesn't need a widebody base badly (sorry MSP folks...); for 5 long-haul flights a day, it can easily be moved in; especially if CDG stays 767 and AMS keeps a 767; would be 1 A330, 1 764 and 1 777 a day - not enough for a base. Not sure if MEM/CVG need a base either; if they can schedule a certain type of plane in there to be the primary plane (ie make both airports mostly Airbus) then it could work but otherwise it's a lot for very little.

I'll admit to not looking at timetables every day, so I don't feel bad about asking: I know the MD90 has moved very much to MSP, but has the replacement flying in SLC primarily been the Airbus fleet?

I have always sorta wondered what the driving force behind selecting an A320 for a route or a 737-800 for a route would be. I can clearly see needing the A319 to move around the system since its the primary 120 seat plane in the stable.

Correct, MEM does a large share of the ATL flying with many of the MEM-ATL frequencies being operated by the D95.

Yes. They closed the SLC M89 base, essentially 'moving' it to MSP which has a huge amount of MD88 and MD90 flying now. A lot of the MSP A320 flying went out to SLC, which does both west coast and east coast from the hub.

Wasn't sure if Detroit could eventually support a 764 base; if they get 2x LHR and keep DTW on a 764 it might be possible long-term. Lots can change in two years time - that's the one thing that's certain.

Other than a vast change of strategy on the part of DL given widebody fleeting, and even narrowbody fleeting, the only bases you mentioned that have a likely to probable chance of opening are:

NYC 320
DTW M88
DTW 73N

Another one not mentioned that has a somewhat likely chance of opening, eventually, would be NYC 330. Again, it depends heavily how DL decides to use the A330 vs the 764.

A NYC 744 base will never happen though, and a LAX 777 base is highly unlikely. The SYD flight is covered by pilots on domestic rotations from ATL or DTW, the HND flight is going to A332, and the occasional NRT flight can be covered by ATL crews on NRT rotations.

Had forgotten that HND was going A330 which does change things. Had been thinking that was staying 777. Granted, who knows what might change in 2 years time once the VAustralia JV is in place and if anything changes with Haneda/Narita.

As for NYC, agree that it was probably the most far-fetched one (I went back in and added it at the end after compiling my list). Just depends on how much Delta wants to keep DHing in pilots for the TLV flight.

I thought almost all DL Flight Attendants were already qualified on Airbus equipment?

Ohhhhh. "Crew base" means "pilot"???

How did you manage to infer that, by them opening a crew base where one is needed for an existing fleet type?? Using your logic and deduction, I could also infer that DL is planning a massive A330 order also, given they are opening an ATL pilot base for the type, and that they are also planning a massive order for more 757/767 because they are increasing the size of the SEA-base.

They already have an order for a better aircraft in exactly the same size class: 788s arriving in 2019, right around time to replace early 763s.

Greater network and fleet needs elsewhere in an era of constrained, finite resources. Domicile realignments are expensive, complex, and difficult to execute.

Words from CEO: remainign DC-9s will be retired individually whenever they need heavy maintenance repair. As Soon as they need it... those will be gone.

This was announced about 2 months ago. But yes, the all airbus' A320 fleet and A330 fleet will be opening in Atlanta, meanwhile the MSP A330 base will close.

That would be 01 January 2015.  

And that has nothing to do with it anyway. If they opened a base, it would be open bid for any PMNW pilot. What's holding them back is ATL having exactly zero (0) daily 744 departures.

The A330 base was communicated the day after the MSP Pilot Training Facility (NATCO) closure was announced. The A330 base is also being moved from MSP. This was, what, 4-6 weeks ago?

My friend is transferring from the MD88 in CVG to the A320 in ATL. He was on the 320 in MEM before the merger. He says alot of MEM guys (and gals) that live in Florida are having a tough time commuting to MEM with all the service cuts.

I bet. And trying to commute via ATL is just as hard, if not worse. The FLA-ATL flights are jam packed, almost always. And last time I flew ATL-MEM it was primarily plowed by Pinnacle and ASA CR9's.
