WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares what is for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Non-daily operations create fractional weekly service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. If a flight operated 5 days out of 7, it would show 0.8 flights.

WHY ARE THERE WEIRD FREQUENCIES IN FAR AWAY MONTHS FOR LCCs?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. Their schedules may also end mid-month. If B6 loads their schedule until Jan15, all flights in Janaury will show half frequency because of the way the report is created.

WHY IS A WHOLE AIRLINE'S SCHEDULE SHOWN AS CHANGING FOR A FUTURE MONTH?
Similarly to the previous question, some airlines load their schedule from nothing inside the 9 month window of this report. When their schedule is extended it will show as new service because there was no previous schedule to compare to. In some instances I will show a more valid comparison against another period.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE PINNACLE
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THE FREQUENCY DOESN'T SHOW A CHANGE, E.G. 4>4
This happens as a result of rounding. There is a change in service that is large enough to be listed, but through rounding it does not appear.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

The MAR and APR changes are just F9 extending the selling schedule. MAY is a partial month, ignore it.

Similar to F9, there is a schedule extension for MAR/APR. You can't look at just this and tell anything. APR is a partial month.

United going daily to SJD/CUN/PVR from San Francisco. This would be an obvious response to VX now serving all 3 markets. They are losing market share in CUN and appear not to wanna fall into 3rd place (behind AS as well) in the other two markets.

KE is changing its ICN-LAS-LAX-ICN route to operate non-stop to/from LAS both directions for a while, so I suspect this is a reflection of that change. Most likely their schedule update ended sometime in late March, which resulted in 0.3 showing for the LAS-ICN non-stop and a remainder 0.1 showing for LAS-LAX(-ICN) beyond the end of the update.

Well Geez Louise.

Air France's A380 service to IAD; additional CO-UA IAD-CDG 757 service , and Open Skies flights to ORY from IAD were suppose to radically reduce the AF footprint at IAD.

These seasonal cuts just don't look radical to me.

I can't wait to see next season's ramp-up.

I agree, and I'm thinking that there might be equipment downgrades as well.

Looking at the detail, they are going to all mainline on ATL by changing a CR7 and CR9 into one MD88, so that is a slight reduction in seats. The DTW service is all CRJ and is an actual cut in both seats/dpts. I do think it may signal they expect WN to leave.

Similar to F9, there is a schedule extension for MAR/APR. You can't look at just this and tell anything. APR is a partial month.

You'd have to know how many days of APR they are now selling and divide to see if there is really any change in APR. I just ignore it.

Let me say, I do not have any ill-will toward DL. It is true that they try a lot of crazy stuff and a lot of the time it does not work. CMH-MCI was a signal to F9 they were upset over MCI-MSP. The only surprise is that they haven't cut the other MCI stuff. They are probably waiting on the slot deal to reallocate. All this intra-Florida stuff is awful. No surprise there. I think they were flying FLL-TLH for state govt traffic. It may have been under subsidy. It's funny they weren't flying it from MIA since they seemed to be moving in on MIA until AA rose up and defended themselves for once. I think DL's MIA aspirations are officially on the wane.

I'm wondering if the OO IAD-IAH CR7 flights that carry both a CO and a UA codeshare numbers will continue.

Last time I took one, the pilot came out of the cockpit before takeoff and casually chatted up the F class cabin.

OO has some really friendly crews. I wouldn't mind having a beer with them.

While I understand the "Delta dartboard" humor, I think it begs the question: were these ever really intended to "last" long-term? Delta had RJ capacity they needed to stuff somewhere, and I suppose lots of these smaller, marginal, sort of "unusual" markets like the MIA flights, CMH-MCI, etc. may have fallen into that category. The planes had to fly somewhere for a period of time one way or another, Delta took a shot, and for the 1 or 2 of these markets that might work, great, but for the rest, little ventured, so not much gained (or lost).

No Delta dartboard at all on CMH-MCI; Frontier dropped the route around the same time Delta announced it. With no F9 in the city-pair, there was no need to continue flying it as a "message."

A very surprising move to see DL return to this market, but perhaps they see an opportunity in AA dropping it. Two daily frequencies won't be competitive against AC & PD, though.

We here in TLH had always wondered about that one, and why it stayed after other service was pulled down.

We used to have TLH -> TPA, MCO, MIA, FLL, and PBI, all intrastate. This was cut down to a single TLH FLL a day, with pretty convenient time for those in South Florida wanting to a day in the State Capital. Judging by the quoted prices, the yields must have been pretty good!

The existing TLH -> FLL is essential an ATL TLH stub, that changes flight numbers and continues on, in both directions.

Many years ago we had GREAT intrastate service on Piedmont, using F28's. We could really use that back! We also had a late night DL MCO -> TLH which was a great "safety valve" when ATL was tangled up with storms!

I love to fly, and it shows!

Yes, VX serves LAX-CUN. But UA is starting to defend it's leisure turf from SFO, which surprises me. Mexico has never been important to UA from here. Though that may change even more with the merger and CO's presence there.

You'd have to know how many days of APR they are now selling and divide to see if there is really any change in APR. I just ignore it.

Their last extension said it would occur in Jan/Feb

I misunderstood. Yes, it appears they have changed their mind. They ran into some crew integration issues recently and that could be causing unexpected problems shifting flying.

DL ATL-RDU DEC 11>10

I can't remember the last time DL was down to 10 daily to ATL. I thought it was either 11 or 12.. one or the other..

Wait till next week, it'll probably change!

Quoting enilria (Reply 11):
They are probably waiting on the slot deal to reallocate.

Agreed

Quoting ScottB (Reply 17):
No Delta dartboard at all on CMH-MCI; Frontier dropped the route around the same time Delta announced it. With no F9 in the city-pair, there was no need to continue flying it as a "message."

You have a better memory. You are right, that was the oddball route that DL got to themselves. That is really classic. They nudged F9 out, got it to themselves, and then it was no longer worth flying. That's supposed to be the definition of success. LOL

Quoting ScottB (Reply 17):
A very surprising move to see DL return to this market, but perhaps they see an opportunity in AA dropping it.

I wasn't surprised. I'll be surprised if they are still there next Winter.

Didn't the increased speed limits in Florida really do a lot of damage to intra-state air service? That plus TSA.

See the line below.

I don't think you can read ahead just yet. Why would DL pull down FNT on the suspicion that FL/WN may drop the route. If it happened after they did sure, but why would they do it in anticipation? What if they don't.

I attribute the FNT changes to the following:
1) DL has been constantly tinkering with the ATL-FNT market ever since the merger. DL used to fly only CRJ/CR7 on this route pre-merger. Then, they started fly 3x DC-9-50. Then over the past few months they even when to 4x with a mix of DC-9 and 2-class RJ. Now they are starting to put even larger MD-88s on the route as the DC-9s are drawn down but offsetting that capacity by reduction in frequency on the 2-class RJs. I don't see them going to 3x per day, particularly during the winter as anything significant.

2) DL is adding a 3rd MSP-FNT flight in the spring. This route was reduced to 1x post-merger and finally this past summer DL added back the 2nd flight. Now it appears they are going even further, adding a 3rd flight. AA has been very sucessful when they came into FNT on ORD-FNT a few years ago, and DL passengers have been wanting better westbound connectivity over MSP on routes that are not available over DTW.

3) DTW-FNT varies now by the day of the week, on anything from 2-4 per day. Most weekdays are 2x, but Saturdays there are only 2 flights per day.

A very surprising move to see DL return to this market, but perhaps they see an opportunity in AA dropping it. Two daily frequencies won't be competitive against AC & PD, though

However, I suspect there is a good portion of BOS-based flyers that might prefer to use DL instead of a Canadian airline.

I'm pretty sure F9 dropped it right around the time DL announced it, and probably had nothing to do with the DL announcement. My understanding is that is wasn't performing well anyway.

How so? Because DL is continually making adjustments. I see a number of reductions but also some additions. Almost all are in regional jet type markets with multiple daily frequencies.

Sometimes people read too much into these routine schedule adjustments......

25 flyguy89 : Well it's one of those ultra-short routes with probably extremely low O&D, COexpress or connection is also on the route with the more appropriate

33 skymiler : Agreed! The AA Eagle acts as a feed to both the DFW and MIA hubs -- which makes good sense. TLH is simply a quick stop on the DFW - MIA route!
