With the first A380 for CZ nearing completion, which routes is it envisaged for?
The first routes will be domestic and/or around Asia.
I started a thread about 4 months ago, asking what the first long-haul China Souhtern A380 route would be... Abouth half the people guessed LAX, the other half said AMS..... a month later China Southern announced their first long haul A380 route will be to CDG

A number of CZ's domestic routes are very dense; As China runs out of airspace along its east coast (this is already a problem, and is set to become an even bigger one as more and more Chinese are able to afford to fly), you're likely to see these jets on high-demand domestic routes like PEK-SHA, PEK-CAN, and PEK-SZX.
The problem that CZ may see on its long-haul A380 routes, at least in the short-term, is that a lot of their intercontinental routes are rather thin; foreign originating passengers prefer not to take Chinese mainland carriers and Chinese-originating demand is very price sensitive and the number of destinations that garner A380-levels of demand are few and far between (mostly North American cities with major Chinese populations and SYD). Consequently, Mainland Chinese (except for CA and HU) carriers only serve a handful of long-haul destinations. Furthermore, CZ will have trouble expanding globally at PEK because of CA's long-haul presence, and potential government constraints imposed by the CAAC. This means most of their international expansion will be from CAN, which is better designed for a 787 than an A380. CDG should work because there's a hub on both ends (in particular, one well-connected to West Africa). Other than LAX, I think you'll see most of them deployed on high-density domestic and regional routes in the near-to-medium term. As Chinese carriers and their long-haul product mature, then we might see more aggressive long-haul service with the A380.
