Yezz old is true, they started flying in the late 50's. I flew a 707 NYC-GIG-JNB and back in 1970 on SAA, and they already had the 747 by then, at least according to the souvenir booklet we received onboard. It was an awesome plane, and even though I was young, I certainly remember how spacious the seating was and elegant the service was even in coach. We were required to deplane in GIG for the refueling, and sat in a holding area watching our shiny bird being serviced in the bright lights, middle of the night.
I always wondered if SA had the rights to carry NYC-GIG, but my Dad says many Portuguese speaking people did deplane upon arrival into GIG. They did a crew change there as well, the crew spoke English, Portuguese and Afrikaans of course.
I just remember how clean and new the plane looked, with the wings and engines glimmering in the airport lights. I guess flying one of their prestige routes, they wanted to make a good showing. I still thimk their livery at that time was very good looking on the 707, and what a take off and great ride.
Anyone know what kind of pitch an SAA 707 would have had in 1970? Especially on such a long route? Almost 24 hours.
It certainly was way better than the DL DC-8 we flew to NYC from LAX, via DFW & ATL. BTW, was JFK operating in 1970? My Dad swears it was JFK, I just don't know when IDW was closed.
On return trip, we flew non-stop NYC-LAX, again my Dad says it was our first 747, and swears it was PA, but wasn't positive. Who flew 747's between JFK-LAX in Aug 1970?

I just got back from a weekend in Iran, chasing 707s. The schedule consists of a morning roundtrip to Mashhad (out 0830 / 0940, rtn 1030 / 1140) and an evening roundtrip to Ahwaz (out 1800 / 1910, rtn 2000 / 2110). Fares are about $70 per sector. Bookable in Iranian travel agencies or the Saha ticket desk in terminal four at Mehrabad. At this point they are totally used to seeing 707 fans, I was there with three other friends, this week I know there is an enthusiast from Germany, from Switzerland, and two from Japan in Iran to fly 707s. Even the skymarshalls are smiley and friendly, we have educated them.

Poor old Golf. She was flying until a couple of months ago, but the real dog of the fleet. More returns to land than you can imagine - cabin pressure failure, control problems, I was onboard in June during a go-around and the inboard flaps retracted to 0 and the outboards jammed at 50. Lots of vibration and I was pretty scared. Sorry to start with such a sad tale! She's parked now, either for a long check or to be used a christmas tree for parts.

Got a new interior, the 70s style "widebody" interior like a 727-200ADV, robbed from Iran Air EP-IRL. She's the only machine flying at the moment, and they are flying the paint off her. A reliable machine, my first Saha 707 flight was with Victor.

Written off in a crash in 2005, two killed by impact and one drowned in evacuation. The nose section has been removed, the rest of the airframe is on the military ramp and used for parts. Engines are removed and used for parts.
As some of you know, Iran is a very friendly and civilised country and well worth a visit for her unique history (5,000 years' worth) and culture. You are absolutely guaranteed a kind and polite welcome, I have been eight times over the years and travelled with aviation enthusiasts of every nationality including Americans, and have never come across any hostility at all. Quite the opposite - welcome to Iran, do you need any help, do you need directions, I hope you enjoy your stay etc. It's almost embarrassing, especially in the light of a first-timer's preconceptions. And English is very widely spoken. If you want to fly on a 707, you have to go. And when the 707s are finally grounded, you'll go back, as I will, cos it's such a wonderful place.

Don't forget all the military E/KE-3s and E-6s were all new builds up until the early 1990s. The E-8s were all used B-707s completely rebuilt into the early 2000s. There are also a few Air Forces around the world still flying B-707 tankers (KC-707/KC-137). Israel and Chile, I believe still have several ELINT B-707s (Chile has 1).

Quoting VV701 (Reply 11): Since Laker sold it in November 1978 it has been operated by various non-airline organisations. I guess this has kept the airframe hours and cycles down. This probably explains its longevity.
And I think it's been stored for the past decade or so.

Are the Argentine Air Force and Israel Air Force examples (with passenger interiors) still in service? What about the Paraguayan -321B, which used to be used for football charters? Any of these still around?
Sad to say, the former RAAF plane (a -386C) was recently scrapped in the UK. There were hopes to keep her flying - or at least to have her in a museum.
