Watching this on Lateline right now. There were 32 people on board -- potentially 4 survivors. No word on cause yet, but there is a chance that fire played a role.

RIP to all those on board -- locals think many of the pax may have been on their way to a graduation ceremony, which is tragic for those families.

There appears to be 4 survivors including both pilots the other 28 have sadly left us.

It appears to be Airlines PNG flight CG1600 operating POM-LAE-MAG. It crashed approaching Madang weather was reported to be "extremely bad weather".

Here is the AvHerald article on this crash, which is reporting four unconfirmed survivors and that the plane was spotted on fire, but that it caught fire upon impact (per the PNG AIC)...

Wonder how this would affect the merger with Air Niugini?

Typical a knee jerk reaction after a crash in those countries. These older Dash 8s have a great safety record, it sounds more like a CFIT in bad weather.

nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

Perhaps but the PNG CAA have reported the aircraft sent out a distress call, that tends not to happen in CFIT accidents.
