LAN Airlines S.A. and Japan Airlines Co., Ltd. were both approved by the U.S. DOT to engage in reciprocal blanket code-sharing.

LAN is permitted to place JAL's code on LAN operated flights between any points behind Chile, via any points in Chile and any intermediate points, to any points in the U.S., and beyond.

JAL is permitted to place LAN's code on JAL operated flights between any points behind Japan, via any points in Japan and any intermediate points, to any points in the U.S., and beyond.

It is due to the fact that 3 or 4 years ago LAN did not operate into LAX 10 to 11 times weekly, SFO was not a LAN destination, SCL-JFK did not operate daily, and LAN did not operate the SCL-LAX route non-stop on a year-round basis. LAN plans to operate the SCL-LAX route on a year-round basis in the near future and will launch new routes into both JFK and LAX; thus the two carriers are planning ahead of time.

I guess this removes any remaining residual doubt that the merged LATAM is going to OneWorld......

The new code-share relationship between LAN and JAL will allow seamless connections between South America, Japan and beyond via certain U.S. points. This new agreement will greatly benefit both carriers' customers. For example, last year LAN Airlines and LAN Perú entered into a bilateral code-share agreement with Cathay Pacific Airways which covers several routes operated by both LAN and Cathay. The code-share relationship between LAN and Cathay is doing very well and both carriers' customers benefit from the relationship forged between the two carriers. Also, LAN recently received approval to code-share on QF's new thrice weekly non-stop service between SYD and SCL. QF has been code-sharing with LAN for years on LAN's daily SCL-AKL-SYD service. Soon both LAN and Qantas customers will enjoy 10 weekly direct flights between SYD and SCL!

I have seen codeshared flights with airlines only having one daily flight to an airport where the partner airline also operated into. I wasn't aware that codeshares needed a minimum number of flights in order to have each other's codes on those flights. Strange but oh well, such is the way it goes with LAN/JAL (apparently).

I'm not sure if you are aware of JAL's recent history. JAL almost left OW during a huge bidding war, and was entering BK. Perhaps LAN was simply being cautious since there was a lot of uncertainty facing JAL's future in many areas. Is it not wise for a carrier to remain cautious considering JAL's position at that time? I'm sure you will disagree...

It involves code-sharing via points with-in the U.S.on flights operated by both LA and JL. Initially, JAL will place its code on LA's SCL-LIM-JFK, SCL-LIM-LAX and SCL-JFK routes and LAN will place its code on JL's JFK-NRT and LAX-NRT routes.

LAN now has code-share relationships with fellow oneworld alliance members AA, BA, CX, IB, JL, and QF.


The next step is for JAL to enter into a code-share agreement with LAN Perú S.A. which operates flights between LIM and LAX, SFO and soon JFK. Also, both LAN and JAL will be amongst the first carriers to operate the B-787 Dreamliner.

Why? Code-sharing agreements across alliances is not all that unusual. More importantly, there's no evidence that despite the merger, each airline won't remain in its own alliance. In fact, what do they gain from leaving either alliance? Not much. TAM's markets don't overlap with LAN's markets at all.

As directed by the TDLC, LATAM Airlines Group S.A. cannot be in the same alliance as AV-TA. Star Alliance has selected AV-TA to join that alliance, thus Star Alliance will loose TAM as a member, as well as access to a plethora of destinations in one of the most important markets in the world.

Most likely, LAN Airlines and LAN Perú will soon announce changes to its flight schedules at LIM that will go into effect during March, 2012.

LAN plans on strengthening operations at the Lima Hub next year by increasing the frequency of flights at LIM and launching new intercontinental routes. This is possible as LAN incorporates new wide-body a/c into the fleet. For example, LAN Perú will increase frequency on the LIM-MIA route to 13x weekly, resume non-stop service between Lima and Easter Island and add additional frequencies on the LIM-EZE route utilizing the B-767-316ERs. Thus, LAN will operate the LIM-EZE route 23x weekly. LAN Perú will also operate into JFK next year, increase frequencies into LAX and SFO and will add 7 additional frequencies between LIM and the Caribbean.
