"ZA003, the third 787 Dreamliner built by Boeing, just got a new paint job. We’ve got big plans for this airplane. It’s too early to provide details, but stay tuned for more info in the coming weeks."

Hmm, interesting. Any clue what it could be? That livery is absolutely amazing I should add.

I'm guessing it'll either go to the Museum of Flight (or Future of Flight) or some sort of world tour. Or both.

Maybe a "world tour" like the 777-300ER, 777-200LR and 767-400ER took.

I always preferred the 'lite' Boeing livery, I'm disappointed that they've taken it off ZA003. I suppose the 'full' version is more distinctive though.

Red/Orange like the 747-8i?? That would look awesome.

This will always be my favorite B787 because I was on board this bird back in November 2010. We didn't fly, but I had a chance to check every corner of it. I even knocked on its skin to check how different it feels from aluminum.

Saying that, I don't particularly like the looks of the 747 so my view may be skewed some what. The Red/Orange livery is certainly a welcome change though, I'm sure it would look even better (in my opinion) on the 787.

Maybe it'll be a Boeing retro going back to the 20's or 30's..

That is the first thing that jumped to my mind, too.

I wonder if "big plans" might have something to do with 789 development.

ZA003 did test the hybrid laminar flow control which will debut on the 787-9.

From somewhere on the internet....
a B787 will arrive in SYD on Nov 15 and then visit MEL 16-17
The aircraft will have dual colour schemes with Qantas on one side and Jetstar on the other.

Quoting VA787 (Reply 14): Well apparently the 787 is meant to be visiting SYD and MEL later this month. I'm assuming something to do with that?
Quoting dynamicsguy (Reply 16): It won't be this month. I know the Melbourne date, but I don't think it's public yet.

My recollection is that it's apparently touching down in Sydney on the 15th then spending two nights here before heading onward to Melbourne on the 17th. There was also chatter of Boeing thinking about doing the return as MEL-AKL-IAH as a proving flight for UA but I think that was just a friend of mine and his wishful thinking (he lives in AKL and can't get across for the visit!)
I doubt that we'll see the plane in QF/JQ livery -- it just says that there will be branding elements from both, aka their logos somewhere on the fuselage. Makes me think this could be the one they plan on using -- what's the situation with this frame -- would it make the flight nonstop, full of test equipment etc?

Quoting PM (Reply 15): So they choose one withh RR. Natch!
The GEnx birds are still performing testing, certification and NAMS, plus ZA003 is now owned by Boeing so running up the flight hours and cycles aren't an issue.

I love it. This is beautiful and Boeing's trademark look. Maybe to the Smithsonian, but I cannot wait to find out.
Long live the 787!

29 qf002: Um, no it didn't... The tail in the photo linked in the opening post shows a full block navy blue tail with a block white '787'... The 'full' livery

34 tdscanuck: Not sure if it's related, but all the newbuilds coming out of the paint hanger also do an RTO as part of their first test flight. You see them happen
35 kanban: Boeing needs to spend less time dreaming up and applying promotional paint schemes and more time getting the babies delivered.
36 AA737-823: Then what would all the paint people do? You forget we have unions in this country; marketing people and painting technicians aren't exactly allowed
37 kanban: well the JAL planes need the new scheme, the Atlas 747's need UPS colors or at least paint out the existing, I don't know if ANA is goint to continue
