Braniff A320?

When did Braniff International ever own Airbus A320s? How long did they operate the A320, I figured out already that they operated them out of ORD, but to where. Here's a photo of the A320-200 at ORD.

This was Braniff II... not the original BI. I believe BN2 was based at Kansas City and was a spectacular failure. The A320 that Braniff II operated were originally ordered by Pan Am, and they soon ended up with America West. The Braniff planes were HP's 18 original A320s. This plane now flies as N622AW with America West.

Interesting shot though... two defunct airlines in one shot.

Wait a second... according to Bill Harm's Jet Census this plane was delivered on 9/1/89... so the date on the photo is wrong.

then got the A320's that now fly for HP. How about this one below? This shot was taken in 1992. Would this be Braniff III?

There have been as many Braniffs as there are Pan Ams. But, as we have learned, none are as good as the original...

P.S.- go to the B terminal here at DFW. The chapel is still dedicated to a Braniff captain. B was 2W- and that was Braniff's terminal.

You are mostly right about Braniff 2. They originally started service in 1984 from DFW as their headquarters and exclusive hub. By the late-80s, they shifted their hub operation completely to Kansas City as American and Delta were impossible to compete against. At that time they were flying 727-200s and 737-200s, and DFW became merely a destination on the route map. Before they went under, they also had a fleet of Fokker 100s,a mini-hub in Orlando and that big order for the A320s.

I don't know much about Braniff 3 other than it was a total flop. I think their livery (like the one you posted) was similar to that of Braniff 1 in its final days.

I thought these were BAC 1-11, not Fokkers. If I remember they were from Trans Florida or something like that.

DALMD88- You're right, they did fly BAC-111s out of MCO, but toward the end, they were phasing them out in favor of the Fokker 100. Braniff 2 wanted to be a huge player in the industry, having a fleet of A320s and F100s.

Braniff 2 did plan to operate Fokker 100s, but never got around to it. The BAC111s and Orlando service were acquired when Braniff 2 took over Florida Express. Ironically, some of them were originally Braniff planes in the 60's! As they slid toward failure a second time, they started painting their planes in the old BI "ultra" scheme (why, who knows?). The third Braniff (early 90's) was a shifty outfit with no corporate ties to Braniff Intl or Braniff 2. They only lasted 2 years or so.

The Braniff A320s that were supposed to go to PA were supposed to replace PA's narrow body fleet of 737-200s along with some 727-200s.

Ok, I lived through the mess...

Braniff started operations in 1984, and contrary to what has been said here was a success, that is until McGee became the CEO of BN from Piedmont.

Prior to his arrival and Jay Pritzger departing the scene BN had slowed operations at DFW and increased MCI. BN purchased Florida Express and opened a hub at MCO. BN then purchased several 737-200's from Delta and AA.

Enter McGee:

BN picked up the Pan Am order for 50 A320's with the V2500 engines with an option for 50 more, as well as 17 F-100's.

McGee and his cronies had the brilliant idea to move the headquarters from DFW to MCO (since it was nicer that MCI, despite the size difference in operations). With a series of bad business moves, the planes, the move HUGE increses in salaries of top management BN became bankrupt again.

At the time of demise, BN was operating I believe 3 or 4 of the A320's (which were known internally as the "3 raniff" planes because of their Airbus designed temporary livery), but they had only been in service for a few weeks.

I was able to go on N903BN, which had the Pan Am interior.

What a tragic mess...
