Vanguard will start service to Reno/Tahoe International on August 12th. I am excited as this will be the only low-fare full-service carrier in RNO (save the regional Allegiant Air). I might try them, has anyone here flown them? Do their planes (13 732's and soon to be 3 pretty old md-80 series a/c) appear clean and safe? Hows their service? Any comments appreciated.

They don't fly to Washington, DC, either...

As for their fleet choice, they don't appear to have the money behind them that Frontier and Jet Blue have. otherwise they should be shopping for 737-700s or A319s...

The planes are a bit long in the tooth (particularly the 732's) but they are clean and well maintained. They're not really a full-service carrier, AFAIK they don't serve meals on flights and just recently implemented a Business Class on the MD-80's. They're your average low-fare carrier, but they do offer some very good deals.

They are all right, nothing special. A typical low cost carrier, they do have flights in to LGA, strange for them to get any slots.

Just looking at the aircraft themselves, they're a bit ragged out; they came that way from U.S. Airways. The 737 paintjob looks cheap, and not every nose cone matches the paint, I've even seen a USAir paintscheme nosecone on one of Vanguard's planes. One problem that Vanguard has had is with their upper management; Jeff Potter came over from Frontier and left after a year. Hopefully the investment by Pegasus Leasing (from whom Vanguard's Mad Dogs are leased from) will help secure the future for Vanguard; but I see them eventually retreating completely from the eastern U.S., too much competition from similar airlines.
