I have a topic in the Travel, Pols & Prefs area, about people favorite DC-10 livery back in the day. Somebody posted a1986 photo, of a Northwest DC-10-40 about to leave LAX for SAN, then it supposed to return back, 2 hours later to LAX. How long did NWA operate DC-10s on the LAX-SAN routes, and were they all 40 series or did some of their 30 series do this flight also?

NW didn't get their -30's until about 1993, after they began the KLM alliance and rapidly needed to get additional aircraft to operate across the Atlantic. The -40s were all delivered new to NW in the 70's, the -30s were all acquired second hand between 1993-2000.

IIRC, NWA (Northwest Orient at the time) started the LAX-SAN service using the DC-10s in 1982. There
were a couple of days when a 727 was substituted. The DC-10's on the route were phased out in early
1986 in favor of 757s.

Forget about the bad utilization of aircraft, I can't believe they filled up DC10s and 757s on LAX-SAN? people didn't have 2 hours to drive back in '82?

Like later decades (A319 near the end), it was probably for connecting passengers to Asia via LAX.

The DC-10's and 757s were tag-on flights to LAX-MSP (SAN-LAX-MSP). Around the same time NW used the DC-10s,
UA had a tag-on to HNL, using a 747, that went SAN-LAX-HNL.

By the time the A319s came along, NW stopped flying to LAX from SAN. (UAX & American Eagle only flew to LAX to
connect with the Asian flights), the A319s were used to fly SAN-MSP, SAN-DTW,and seasonally SAN-MEM. The
757's were also used on the SAN-MSP route.

I checked some old timetables (I have an Access database of all Northwest schedules from 1993 forward):

-1993: mix of A320, 727-200, 757-200 (flight number varied)
-1994-1997: mix of A320 and 727-200 (NW1/2, which was LAX-NRT-MNL)
-2000: A319 (NW25/26, which was LAX-KIX-MNL?)

My mistake. I was only going off memory. I thought the A319's / A320's were only used nonstop
for SAN-MSP and SAN-DTW. I thought by the early 1990s, all mainline between SAN-LAX had
went regional.

We're both right--the route came back only briefly, and that instance was my primarily recollection of it.

Charter flight arriving from IND. Without confirming, circumstantial evidence suggests that it was carrying the Colts: http://scores.espn.go.com/nfl/recap?gameId=281123024
