Looks like the old code share wh**e isn't neglecting their partnership with AA in favor of DL after all, as some have speculated. This puts that more in line with the AS/DL reciprocal elite member FF agreements.

This just speaks to the remarkable amount of behind the scenes work that takes place to maintain these relationships. Keeping the AA and DL partnerships fresh and vibrant is the single best move that Alaska Airlines can make......there are some excellent decision makers at AS and their unique model is one to be envied.

Kind of reminds me of the girl that messes around with two guys... it is ok for a while, but one of the guys gets greedy and becomes more aggressive. Although I don't think DL will "beat up" AA or vice versa, wonder if we'll see a little war between AA and DL, trying to sway AS away from the other. Then again, AA, DL, and AS may just enjoy the free love   (where you at Superfly? lol)



Ironically I have never flown a Delta MD-90 :)

As other posters have pointed out, AS earns some of their business success from the partnership, code share relationships and connecting feed with AA and DL. That clearly benefits AA and DL too. If either got greedy and tried to severe the AS relationship with the other, I can't help but to think it would bite the offending airline in the a**. For example if DL pulled AS away from AA, then AS would loose the benefits of the AA partnership which would weaken AS, and a strong AS has to be more advantageous for DL. Same the other way around.

Does this make sense? So far, neither AA or DL has attempted to wrestle AS away from the other (or buy them out) so maybe they agree. Perhaps AA and DL each recognize that it's in everyone's best interest to just leave well enough alone and enjoy the benefits they get from the current AS partnership.

Agreed. I also believe that this strategy well positions AS to remain successfully independent in the long term. If AS does in fact want to remain AS long-term, as they publicly state, then I think they are doing exactly the right things to make that work - smart partnership decisions, and smart "organic" growth.

Maybe I'm naive. While certainly any company wants to increase profits and beat the competition, I don't think DL's management lays awake at night thinking of ways to screw over AA, and vice versa. I would hope they each just let sleeping dogs lie, so to speak, and enjoy the benefits they currently get from AS. Seems to me like that would be better for everyone involved including the customers (the who?).

lol I don't claim to know anything. May be smarter in aviation than 99% of the world, but I'm middle of the bucket on A.net. Basically I was saying that your idea made sense, but who knows what goes on behind the scenes and what DL or AA wants. I'm not trying to open up the AS + DL merger can of worms that pops up every week on here, but you have to admit, it is a possibility (I don't personally think it would happen.) But if DL was aiming for this, I could see them getting cozier with AS, not to screw over AA but to make a merger easier

That's EXACTLY the case - it's like the old doctrine of Mutually-Assured Destruction; one side making a move is ultimately bad for both, so neither does.

Both AA and DL realize and recognize the value the other brings to AS, and since both need AS, neither will upend that particular apple cart.

Maybe DL is just waiting to see how AA shrinks and will be forced to somehow leave Alaska alone, since they will be focused on solving their own problems... Then DL will look to get AS to itself!

AS could negotiate for upgrade stickers from AA....at the price of providing guest upgrades to AAdvantage elites. Think scoring a comp upgrade on AS is hard now? Imagine if AA elites were using guest upgrades to "skip the line" ahead of AS MVP, Gold, and Gold 75K members!

Not so worth it now, eh?

Well, they've already devalued my MVPG upgrade certs for next year. Anyway, if UGs are brought in to the mix, I suspect AA people will be cleared after the 75K, Gold and MVPs. Just like they do with Delta elites.

I did notice an important difference however, DL Elites get upgrades, AA's do not.

That is quite a trick isn't it? Lance Burton himself would struggle to pull that illusion off but somehow, certain FF's have turned it into an art.

As an AA platinum living in Seattle, that makes me very happy. They already offered priority boarding, but being able to get priority security too is a nice feature. If only they allowed upgrades, it would be win win, but I guess we can't get everything.

Well, yes, the paper certs were great since they were occasionally collected (this goes back to 1993 when I first started flying AS, btw). However that's not why I'm upset about the new ones. I'm upset about them being restricted away from the G/T fares and if I make any changes to my flight, I have to call AS back and get a "new" cert issued.
