Why Did Southwest Never Start Puerto Rico?

The thought came up now.. How come they've never started Puerto Rico? Is it because they need over water equipped planes? I would assume that from Florida and Texas they shouldn't but I'm not too sure about the Northeast. I know JetBlue doesn't have them yet they're pretty large in Puerto Rico. The 737's could have also easily made it from FLL, TPA, MCO, MSY, HOU etc. . It would also technically still be a domestic flight. So why have they never started it?

My guess though, as SJU can tend to low yield, and long range, that really isn't fitting with the "Southwest Model". Perhaps as they develop the ATL hub, that may change. (From ATL to SJU, only life jackets are required).

They offer it now, via FL. Once the code-share is in place SJU will pop up on southwest.com. For now you can book FL and eventually your A+ Rewards will move over to Rapid Rewards, which is what I'll be doing next year when I visit P.R.

Further, regardless of the routing, Puerto Rico cannot be flown on a Domestic certificate, which is what WN has.

While I've not heard it officially, I assume they are keeping FL's certificate since it is Flag and the 717s are on there.

WN has had life vests on all their aircraft for a number of years now. It lets them serve Florida from the southern and western parts of the country without having to follow the coast.

Yes, but to go into New York oceanic, from say JFK area to SJU, HF radios and life rafts are required.

SJU doesn't fit into the WN business plan.

It is a single point destination 900+nm from any other possible service location. It is a low yield destination for the SWA passenger model. It ties up aircraft for longer periods of time than WN normally does.

Using the FL certificate and aircraft would easily meet the goal of international service, allow them to test and fine tune international operations , but preserve the domestic WN operation until the international was worked out sufficiently to integrate.

WN is slowly testing and building more long distance flights and capacity into their network. Something like SJU will come.

The one thing WN does not do is jump into a city/ location/ type of service without extensive planning and preparation. Their 'failure' rate of new service locations is much lower than other airlines.

It basically means that a U.S. airline can operate flights to foreign destinations. If you fly more than 2 hours from the U.S. or in Class II navigation airspace you need to have a flag certificate in order to operate. That's why Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, American Samoa, Puerto Rico, etc. all require operators to have a flag certificate.
