Spirit Airlines signs commitment for 75 Airbus A320 Family jets

Spirit Airlines and Airbus signed today at the Dubai Airshow a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for 75 single-aisle aircraft, comprising 45 A320neo aircraft (new engine option) and 30 A320s. The engine selection will be announced later.

The new aircraft will be used on Spirit’s targeted growth markets in the U.S., Caribbean and Latin America. The A320neo will help build on the great economic success the airline has already enjoyed with their existing all-Airbus fleet of 35 A320 Family aircraft

Congrats to Spirit and Airbus

NK's MOU boost the NEO's order book to 1218 firm and 152 pending.

Maybe this will put to rest the A-net rumors that NK is a possible partner for F9.

From their press release:

"These aircraft are in addition to the 33 aircraft not yet delivered under Spirit's existing order and would be scheduled for delivery from 2016 through 2021."

Spirit is becoming the narrowbody version of Emirates in terms of growth. I guess my fear is that the other airline see all this growth coming and decide to stomp on them. That is what happened to F9 with Ted and WN is already showing signs of impatience with NK encroaching on them.

This order once firmed by years end adding to the 35 existing aircraft + 33 firm orders will increase the Spirit Air fleet to 143 Airbus A320 family aircraft.

Now when are the A330 orders coming???

Indeed congrats are in place. This is a nice order which I did not see coming yet. The picture in reply 2 shows a very nice, almost summerly looking bird.  .

Spirit got a new livery several years ago because the "digital" livery was found too expensive to maintain. As NK is a ULCC, every penny counts.

I don't work for FWA, their tenants, or their ad agency. But I still love FWA.

Spirit for the 2011 calendar year has received 3 A320's so far, 2 more ( N608NK and N609NK ) will be added now in Nov and Dec for a total of 5 for the year.

The fleet currently has 35 aircraft ( 26 A319's, 2 A321's and 7 A320's) by years end fleet will be 37.

- Next year in 2012 NK will add 7 aircraft, followed by 7 in 2013, 7 in 2014 and 10 in 2015.
- All of the scheduled deliveries should be A320's (A319's on firm order have been changed to A320's apparently).
- Spirit's fleet will be 68 aircraft in 2015 (26 A319's, 2 A321's and 40 A320's)

Adding today's MOU of aircraft deliveries between 2016 and 2021 Spirit's fleet might be as follows by end of 2021:
143 Narrowbody Airbus... 26 A319's, 2 A321's, 70 A320's and 35 A320neo

Not sure if the A321's and some A319 will be replaced by then as no mention of replacement aircraft but aircraft labelled for growth are being ordered.

So now thinking will NK go for A330-200's or A330-300's for the future expansion to......???

It was a few different reasons, yes cost of repainting was a major factor as was additional weight of black/silver digital livery compared to latest mostly white fuselage. The fuel savings across the board add up to quite a bit of $$$
I personally loved the black/silver digital one.

The reason Spirit changed the original blue white digital livery to the black/silver one was the previous owner's had royalty payment's due for every new aircraft painted in the blue/white digital due to a copyright.. so hence the change from blue/white to black and silver as the story goes.

Like an earlier post, basically Spirit is going to go after some of WN's markets. LAS is a perfect example and from what I can see, their lower operating costs seems to give them a "no fear" attitude.

By Twitter: Airbus expects NEO commitments to top 1,500 before year-end, Leahy says at #DXB11

I assume he means orders as there are already more orders and commitments for the NEO.
The Spirit order, among others, is surely expected to firm up fast.
If this does indeed happen then I find it hard to believe that the MAX can catch up. Time will tell.

Would love to see how many seats they squeeze into an A330-300.....

I hope some of this expansion is in ACY after the terminal expansion is complete.

I have no association with Spirit Airlines

NK has been ignored by most everybody, but WN announcing FLL-SJU is a real swipe at them.

Not really ignored by everyone, but in FLL AA and US tried (unsuccessfully) to add flights down to central america/carribean but combination having to use Terminal 4 for Customs/Immig (long delays and transferring to another terminal for continuing connections) combined with low airfare by NK it was not financially viable for either to operate many flights...

Terminal 4 is horrible for Int'l connecting pax arriving not only non connecting Int'l pax. Having to clear customs/immigration then having to recheck your bag and do TSA security again is a major problem (Time, liquids, convenience etc)

I think WN starting FLL-SJU is logical since AirTran operates(d) flights to SJU from various Florida cities already doing FLL-SJU was the next step not necessarily a swipe at NK. Many markets will overlap in the future.

In the grand scheme of things I think most airlines are not worried about NK and NK is not worried about them, let's be realistic if one or two flights a day to a destination make or break you then something is wrong in your business plan when offering hundreds of flights daily systemwide.

Hey nkops,
From reading on the Airbus website and other sources max configuration for the A330-300 is 440 seats... ouch.

Thinking along the lines of what has been done with the A319, A320 and A321 it makes sense they would place as many seats as possible. Possible A330-200 at 350-370 seats and the A330-300 at 400-430 seats Measurements and diagrams have been worked on by NK for the FLL H gates to study A330's using certain gates...

We shall see big route announcements and frequency increases for NK in 2012, take it almost as a fact considering they will recieve a generous amount of aircraft next year.

I wonder if Airbus charged Spirit a fee for placing the order?
