As part of Southwest's acquisition of AirTran, there's a big terminal shuffle going on right now at BWI.

* AirTran (previously located in concourse D) will move to Southwest's A/B concourse, effective as of right now.
* JetBlue moves to concourse D, effective as of right now.

* Effective December 2011, Delta will move from concourse C to concourse D. This will allow for AirTran to expand ops into concourse C. BWI is also working on building an airside walkway that will connect concourses B and C. This will allow Southwest / AirTran to have space in concourses A / B / C that is connected. Currently, only concourses A and B are connected airside.

* Current layout is as follows:
- A: Southwest
- B: Southwest/AirTran
- C: Delta, American
- D: US Airways, United, JetBlue, Continental, Cape Air
- E: Air Canada Jazz, British Airways, Condor, Vision Airlines

Just thought it would be nice to give everyone an update on one of the nation's fastest growing airports, one that I am proud to call home!

Much appreciated...

So far B6 only has 1 gate in "Ghetto D". They have D-2. DL is making the move into the slums of the airport not, for the ambiance of poor HVAC and the 27 generations of Ben and Willard but because of the virtually brand new baggage belt, makeup facilities and baggage service office. I don't believe DL will take all the old gates we left behind. As, I mentioned in other posts. The big government boondoggle called the MAA spruced up the lighting and added aqua marine mood lighting so D doesn't look as pathetic as it had for the almost 10 years I called it my home at work. The state should step up to the plate and get some reall pest control, and replace the aging inefficient spotty A/C units to make D habitable. And D should get with it into the 21st. century and add charging ports and ceiling mounted TV's with CNN airport network. I wish all well in ghetto Concourse D. I don't miss it a bit. We moved to the bright side B 2 days ago.

I believe B6 only had one gate in C too, as the only flights they operate are BWI-BOS, which run 4x daily if I remember correctly.

DL has a nice setup at C right now, I'm going to be sad to see them have to leave it for the dump that is concourse D. I'm hoping that DL will pressure the MAA to spruce the place up a little bit ... Obviously it's not important enough to the UA/US/B6 operation that they would invest a great deal in it, but DL will have the most ops out of that terminal than all of those, so maybe they'll finally get someone to put some money into it.

Just an observation: The moving-out from concourse D of AirTran, and the elimination of their hawkers yelling at you: "Flying on AirTran?" to get you to sign up for this or that, combined with the singular act of JetBlue and their clean, fresh, sky blue logo going up D-2, the appearance of concourse D has improved dramatically!

To me, what made D look like a ghetto was AirTran. Nothing personal, zippyjet, I don't fly AirTran much (actually, not all. Maybe as part of WN, who knows). And, Baltimore is not my hometown. I still have a tough time thinking of BWI as anything more than old Baltimore-Friendship (BAL) of the '50s. Very, very unfair, I know. BWI isn't all that bad, even if it is tough for me, growing up in Pa. Dutch country and living next to Dulles since shortly after it was built, to admit. What I read that many people dislike at BWI, I have to give the airport lots of credit, for trying, if nothing else. Oh to be an airport owner/operator/manager/administrator in this wacky economic/political era and with what has been/is going on with the airline industry!

Regarding Concourse D, someday, they may finish the apron construction down there at the end of D, where CO was/is! And, who knows, UA and CO might figure out what the combined show might look like. And their flights at BWI will be? As to the old Red Carpet Club, now AirSpace, just before D-12, what is to become of that? A business model for success?

Wishing you all the best of luck!

Given the passenger traffic through D concourse, the crusty, crappy food offerings are startling. For instance, there's nothing as gross as Chesapeake Roasting Company in any other concourse.

Maybe a change of clientele will elevate the amenities.

One can hope.

As mentioned, the state did spruce up D a wee bit. They updated the lighting (did this in all terminals) and added the blue green aquamarine mood lights. Actually Concourse D from D-1 through the UA/CO/Cape Air Gates up to D-15 is halfway decent. The HVAC works even during our torrid summers. However, the majority of D from the Chesapeake Bug Roachsters to the hammerhead commuter gates of US is just a plain tatty dump. The HVAC is questionable at best. IN the summer, temperatures as well as tempers soar. And those double glass doors to the jetways is just an anachronism and they blow open whenever the wind blows. It would probably cost almost as much to rehab D as it would to demolish it and start anew. I remember when D opened in the early Reagan era. I was less than impressed. (I went for job fares at Piedmont) and the air conditioning was anemic at best at the higher numbered gates. The design and feel was utilitarian cheap and for spotting woefully deficient with high silled windows that let plenty of the heat and glare from the sun in but nothing else. At least Concourse C being the original from Friendship was built much better and had some redeaming qualities and the A/C works much better.

No offense taken. I agree with you regarding the huckster atmnosphere for the credit cards. I remember even when hired back in Spring of 02 D looked worn. We basically inherited the beaten down 70's era gate holding areas including counters and podiums from the Piedmont empire. When US absorbed Piedmont, they downsized and even with Metrojet which precceded us, little or nothing was done in Concourse D. The MAA had a lot on their plate in the early to mid 2000's. They were building the showplace A/B for WN. Also there was the big roadway expansion and improvement project for arrivals and departures. Also at that time, we had W in the White House, so the economy started it's crash landing which in turn hit the state and local governments which in turn our industry took a big hit. So, D was the newest of the old and I guess was a bottom end priority. On the high gate part of D concourse besides woeful air conditioning there is a plethora of structural problems (leaky roofs) last summer at least 5 or six times the A/C croaked on the entire pier. To bring D really up to today's standards would be throwing good money after bad. Its too narrow (moving sidewalks), energy inefficient (pealing black paint outside), and vermin problem.

The Chesapeake Bug Roachster is a big hit with the mice population.

There are two decent eateries/bars: Green Turtle and Rum Island Cafe/Bar but there needs to be more. Fortunatly, a "B Relax recently opened where the old Piedmont/USAIR club was.

To open an establishment inside the airport one has to jump through the hoops and do the dance with beaurocratic slowm moving state government.
