LH A319 Circling Around Malta (flightradar24)?

Hey, I was just on flightradar24.com, and there is a LH A319 flying under the flight number DLH9999 circling (at low altitude) many times around Malta (and landing and taking off). It seems to have just landed now, but it might take off again soon if it follows this pattern.

Here is a screen shot taken at 12:20pm (CEST).

Can anybody explain this behaviour?

Thanks. I thought it might be something like that, but didn't know Lufthansa Tecknik was at Malta.

Could also have been base training with newly-rated pilots - LH sometimes does that in Malta. Condor also does so fairly often.

Most definitly training. They are done on weekends, most of the time with A319s. Also there are hardly any maintenance occurances that would require multiple traffic patterns...

Do they have to pay landing fees on training flights?

Depends what sort of deal they have with the airport. Lufthansa Flight Training used to have a subsidiary flight school called InterCockpit in Croatia, and they negotiated a contract with a yearly payment that covered all landing charges by LH Flight Training aircraft for a hefty flat yearly payment to Croatian ATC. They sent quite a few aircraft to ZAD for base training under the terms of that contract.
