Qatar Airways to touch more Indian destinations

KOLKATA: After Kolkata, which became its 12th destination in India recently, Qatar Airways is now mulling adding two more to expand operations in the country.

The airline's CEO, Akbar Al Baker said today that as per a bilateral agreement between the two countries, the airline could add two more destinations, which it would like to do by next year.

Qatar Airways would be the official airline during the FIFA World Cup, 2022, he said.

I wonder what the two destinations will be?

Might they return to Nagpur?

What other major Indian population centres do they not serve?

Amritsar?
Varanasi?
Pune?
Trivandrum (sorry I can't remember the new long name!)
Trichy?

Good to see the growth continuing anyway!

They Serve ATQ and TRV.

My guess would be either restarting NAG or maybe starting JAI, IXE or PNQ.

Hoping it is PNQ   with my user handle - it should really be no surprise that I am rooting for it

I'd guess it's TRZ or PNQ and CJB.

Lucknow and Jaipur have good potential for a 5 weekly A320 service if QR operated there.

After Kerala, I am told the largest number of GCC based labor workers hailing from India originate from Uttar Pradesh state of which LKO-Lucknow is the main international airport gateway point.

What QR also desperately need is a 2nd daily BOM flight with an A321.

Nagpur was already on QR map back in 2006/7 and was canceled if my memory is correct in 2008, but i will see Lucknow and Varanasi as new destinations.

They could consider Madurai. It covers a large area of South TN.

Why doesn't it serve BOM more than daily? How are the loads so far? Ive seen trip reports where the flights were either all full or mostly empty.

LKO and JAI may be interesting destinations, but QR does not have rights to these two points in the bilaterals. The points are specified and barring NAG, QR is operating to all other points given to them.

QR cannot start a 2nd BOM because even that is not permitted under the current bilateral.

Unless there is a Temporary Operating Permit granted to Qatar (highly unlikely) or a new bilateral between India and Qatar (even more unlikely) which may give them new points, for all of Akbar's annoucements, what he can presently do is restart NAG and upgauge to CCU besides maybe a couple of other points. For new points he can howl at the moon.

And if the Government does indeed give them any new point - it may just provide the spark for the opposition to pull the Government down. Vayalar and his masters love their chairs way too much to try any such adventures.

QR has rights to fly to LKO however I'm not sure about JAI

Interestingly they hold a slot at BOM for a second flight.

They have been giving QR as much as they want even after 2009 elections. The recent ICAO meet at BOM has resulted in Air Arabia, Qatar Airways and Oman Air getting additional access to India. Maybe w.r.t QR is announcing two new destinations.

Quoting pnqiad (Reply 3):
Hoping it is PNQ

So am I, however given the existing circumstances LKO and CJB stand a better chance. But please do pray that some miracle happens and QR gets a slot at PNQ at their desired time!

The last bilateral was in 05-06FEB2009 where QR was given access to 13 points in India with BLR coming in from Winter 09-10 and DEL getting 2nd flight eff Winter 10-11. There was no provision therein for any other points or for a 2nd BOM.

If anything else was given in between seems very unlikely though QR has been making several parleys for the same.

ICAAN started off with a note that India would not give any rights to anybody during this Conference. Especially considering the damning CAG report, giving rights to GCC carriers is politically shooting themselves in the foot. I'd like to see what MoCA will have to say to AI's unions after assuring them that there will be no bilaterals till 2015...

lets see Vimanav...if QR announces LKO in the next 2 weeks, all that Indian Govt is preaching considering no more bilaterals will show that "everybody has a price for the million dollar man" (Ted Dibiase) :P

There was an amendment after that, a minor one though, wherein the number of seats were increased and additional points granted from W11 or S12. The destinations were to be "mutually agreed".

Yes so as a token, they kept the DXB carriers at bay, but the non glamorous carriers like QR, WY, G9 an increase. It's all about money and the AI unions make noise only when their honchos want them to, stuff the babus mouth with money and no b***ard will even open their mouth. Unfortunate state of politics!
