Why did the original 747s have only 3 windows on the upper deck? If the U/D was planned as first-class lounge space, wouldn't more windows, rather than less, have been preferable?

I believe originally that area was intended to
function as a crew rest but later on the whole
lounge thing developed to entice customers. And
I would imagine that the intent was to get a "club-like"
atmosphere so windows weren't priority... I bet
those upper decks that remained with only 3 windows
but had revenue seating were clostrophobic at best!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

The 747 was expected to become a freighter, with the dawn of supersonic travel. The Upper Deck was only so the nose could be opened to give a bigger Cargo Door, to fit Cargo in!

There was only a big space behind the cockpit, until some airline decided to put seats in it.

With the subsequent unpopularity of Concorde, the 747 would remain in passenger service so the airlines utilized the space in the upper deck.

Later they would make it larger thus keeping the First or Buisness class passengers away from all us peasants!
