The Middle East is one of the world's fastest growing markets for air cargo and FX is responding to demand. FX 008 will continue from CDG weekly and the same number will be used on off days for hot sort n/s from MEM. FX has 45 firm orders for the 77F and 15 options they anticipate to fill in 2012.

I never thought we'd see an ultra long haul freighter route. Are you sure that is nonstop both ways or is it one way? If any plane could do it, it would be a 777LRF, but still a surprising route for me. I could see it one way if cargo typically flies one direction and not the other.

If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

The 777 has been doing MEM-DXB for at least 6 months now. FlightAware shows it all the way back to August and it's been doing it since at least the beginning of last summer.

A340-500: 4 engines 4 long haul. 777-200LR: 2 engines 4 longer haul

I do remember reading this a while back on the FX intranet. Will be nice to see the MD11s being bumped back to domestic as the 777 takes over the international long-haul.

On a related note, according to the FX MSP senior ramp manager, a new aircraft order to replace the MD10 is probably going to be announced within the next few weeks. He also mentioned the A310 will be affected but didn't elaborate. I would think the A310 will be less necessary now with the expansion of the 757 fleet and the upgauge from MD10 to MD11 domestically.

DHL has been doing CVG-BAH-HKG-CVG for quite a while now, alternating between B744F from Polar and B777F from Southern. The last leg is 15.5 hour block, in case you were wondering.

Interestingly the B777F can haul almost double the payload of the B744F on the HKG-CVG leg. Then again, this is the aircraft that can fly direct SYD-FRA and still carry 30 tons of freight ....

Competition at work. By using a 777 non-stop, FedEx can skip the stop-n'-sort in CDG and cut a day from the transit time between the USA and Middle East, putting it on par with DHL and a day ahead of UPS.

I've got $h*t to do

If I recall, it was MEM-CDG-DXB-BOM-HKG and reverse with a MD11

I heard it might be the 76. Boeing might be willing to make a deal to keep the line running until it's time to build the KC-767.

Shutting down, then restarting any production line is expensive.
