Hey everyone,
Last night i was on a UA flight from SFO to LAX and realized an untitled 747 at the United maintenance. I think it had United colors. Can anyone provide me more info on this aircraft? it is supposed to be scrapped?

Thanks

It is possible that UA was leasing it out.

I don't have the reg's, but there are actually a few UA birds that appear to be leaving the fleet. There is also a 757 with title's and Tulip gone. They have been here a few weeks.

I'm pretty sure its N173UA. I believe the lease ended in October.

Would this 744 have had the new interior with IFE in Y?

Looks like a good guess to me. All signs point to its last flight being in late September.

I got some pictures of it back in August, too. Likely the last time I saw it.

I think all the 744s in service now have IPTE. As for PTVs in Y, if that's what you mean, I think putting PTVs in Y on the 744s would have required all new seats and with the 787s and 350s coming on line in the next 5 years to replace the 744s, PMUA wasn't willing to make that kind of investment in the comfort of their lowest yielding passengers. Who knows, maybe now that CO has taken over and LH is putting PTVs in Y on their 744s, we'll see a change. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I do have to wonder though, when an airline puts in a proprietary hard product, like IPTE, on a leased airplane, then returns the plane to the lessor, do they put back the previous generation first and business class seats? or just fill in the empty spaces with coach seats? I can't imagine UA would not tear out the IPTE seats before they hand it over, as those are the property of United, not the lessor, I would think.

Feel free to correct me.

Why are people so against low yields?! If lower yields means more people can travel abroad, i'm all for it

Those two planes are still there? They've been sitting there for ages. I believe the B744 is awaiting original engines that were swapped out during it's service.

Has United replaced these returned 744s with other aircraft or is it reducing the number of aircraft it operates? Has anyone picked up the lease for these 744s? They must be pretty well maintained. How many 744s are parked these days without a home?

So where does UAL store unused business class seats?? That must be an interesting warehouse to wander through!

Noting the data acquired by: http://data.flight24.com/airplanes/n173ua/ the last flight was UAL9925 today

Flightaware shows: http://flightaware.com/live/flight/U...5/history/20111206/1730Z/KSFO/KMZJ

So it appears it was ferried SFO-MZJ and arrived 45 mins ago.

This was the ship that did that hella' awesome flyby during fleet week!

Yes, but keep in mind that LH is only going to be installing the PTVs in Y on the 16 (?? 16 sounds right) 744's that will be staying in the fleet. The others are not being refitted and will be replaced by 748's which will have the PTVs.
