With smog cancelling nearly 1,000 flights from Sunday to Tuesday at PEK, is this the longest time an airport has been closed due to smog? Has this happened at PEK before and have other airports been closed due to smog? Is the reason purely low visibility or are there other factors?
"The delays since Sunday evening at one of the busiest, most modern airports in the world raise questions about whether air pollution in China has gotten bad enough to derail the country's economic growth. Nearly 1,000 flights have been canceled and 10 highways in northern China had to be closed due to lack of visibility."

Reading the article, I wonder why the Chinese are so much in denial and how crazy their pollution policy has been. But to their credit, they are going like crazy on developing wind and solar energy.
