New destinations are always good. I have an odd feeling I'll probably end up seeing a lot of Sioux City and Waterloo...

SUX service to ORD should do well.

I think at one point in 1990/91, UA served SUX with mainline equipment, at least in part to thank the town's residents for their support after the 1989 DC-10 crash at SUX.

Can anyone check UA timetables to confirm this?

It's good to see AA step into these markets since they might lose DL service to MSP in the future.

It really is amazing how much Eagle has Iowa covered. This will now be six markets within the state connected to the AA/Eagle network through DFW and/or Chicago. That really is a lot when you think of how relatively small Iowa is (geographically and demographically).

It follows AA/Eagle's (I believe smart) pattern of trying to enter small U.S. markets where their is little or no competition, and they can generate higher yields that have some halo effect on the rest of their network - particularly through the DFW and Chicago hubs.

Eagle has been very successful in recent years of doing this in a lot of small markets, including both EAS and non-EAS, and also markets with local military bases. Some of these markets haven't worked, but most have (including several former EAS cities that Eagle has been able to turn into self-sustaining stations).

Let's hope these two work out well.

Why is EAS funding service to an airport that already has DL service?

Although EAS flights are a different history, this adds two new destinations to the Chicago cornerstone, and could be an indication that AA won't dehub ORD.

In the past two years AA has started or resumed service from ORD to PEK, HEL, MEX, TRI, ART, AVP, CHO, FAR, FSD, ILM, MDT, RAP, and I'm sure I forget a few ones.

Hopefully they will continue to add destinations. Maybe even expand service on some of the routes they have started.

I'm sure the DL service will be ending once AA starts. DL wasn't getting a subsidy to either of these places even though they were the only show in town. It either looks like they also asked for subsidy and lost or just let AA/MQ have it.

This now makes 8 MSP markets that are losing DL Conn. service after the 6 ZK markets. Here are the 24 markets that DL was either planning on leaving or requesting subsidy for:

MSP markets:

BJI
HIB
INL
JMS
DVL
PIR
ABR
SUX: Going to AA
ALO: AA
BRD: ZK
TVF: ZK
MCW: ZK
FOD: ZK
ATY: ZK
IMT: ZK

DTW markets:

ESC
APN
CIU
PLN

MEM markets:

GLH
MSL
TUP
PIB

Seaport has applied for all these markets but I don't think a decision has been made.

SLC market:

BTM

I'm curious what's going on in the other markets if anyone knows.

So are BJI, HIB, INL, JMS, DVL, and ABR just losing service with no one picking up the contratcs? Or is DL bidding on those cities?

I know PIR loses DL service

Someone's got to fly them so I guess we'll just have to wait and see. PIR service actually keeps getting extended so who knows when that will actually end.

I just checked and they are charging $295 for a return flight. Isn't that a bit too much for a direct flight?

You're not, that's all AA/MQ has in Iowa, although MLI is pretty close.

I know DL bid on some of the markets out of MSP; I'm just not sure which ones

Interesting in that DL is ending service to two markets (BRD and SUX) that have res call centers. Not that its a reason to stay, just ironic.

I keep hoping Eagle will add an EAS market in Western Kansas (Dodge City or Garden City). Given the ties that area has to Mexico, I would think a flight DFW would do nicely.

Wow, I must have been sleeping. But, right you are.

I think Dodge City probably would have been a better choice. Finney County is suffering from a declining population, but Ford County has a stronger economy. Dodge city is also centrally located to Liberal and Garden City.

This is great news for American Eagle and Iowa. I'm glad these cities will continue to see service with a well connected airline to a well connected hub.

I must admit, being a native Iowan, the only time I have been to Sioux City was somewhat of an accident and the place did suck. Also, many Iowans refer to Sioux City as "Sewer City."

Good for both cities to retain jet service with a legacy carrier. Perhaps having non stops to ORD and it being a world wide hub and major business center will help O&D numbers on this route. MSP in this region is more of a "drive to" than a "fly to" city.
