Chinese Airport Expansion?

As an admitted airport aficionado, I have been following the expansion of China's airports for the last 10 years or so and it' been nothing short of incredible... most people on A.net are familiar with the big four (PEK, PVG, SHA and CAN) which have all basically doubled in size since 2000. I've been digging around for more information on some of the second- and third-tier airports, which have been growing just as rapidly, but information is much harder to come by without a knowledge of written Chinese or a reliance on the sometimes-unreliable Wikipedia. I was curious if anyone here can tell me a bit more about expansion programs at the following airports:

Chengdu (CTU): I visited CTU back in May and there is a new terminal (basically a larger version of the current terminal which opened in 2001) under construction. There is also a parallel runway - visible on Google Maps - but I seem to remember reading there are even more ambitious plans for another parallel runway and 'midfield' style terminal complex to the southeast of the present airport.

Xian (XIY): I also passed through XIY in May and was really surprised by how busy it is. There's a wide-spaced parallel runway about to open, along with a very large third terminal connected to two new piers. Does anyone know who will use the new terminal? The Google Maps image is about a year or so old - construction was pretty far along when I was there in May.

Chongqing (CGK): Google Maps shows a second closely-spaced parallel runway under construction and a second terminal south of the current one, with another pier. Are there more plans? I didn't visit Chongqing, but a flight attendant on China Southern told us it was one of the most overcrowded airports in the country.

Shenzhen (SZX): I flew through SZX in May and there is a huge new terminal and offshore runway being built. Will all airlines move to the new building and if so, what will happen to the two existing terminals? The Shenzhen Metro was just extended to the existing terminals, so I have to think they'll remain in use. The airport's location doesn't appear to allow for much more expansion beyond the current one, but I know that nothing's impossible in China.

Hangzhou (HGH): On Google Maps it looks like HGH is getting a new parallel runway. Any idea when this is projected to be finished?

I've been trying to find any information about expansion projects at other airports as well - Nanjing, Shenyang, Wuhan, Xiamen (which, along with Dalian, is basically hemmed in by city and water), Harbin, Urumqi, Haikou, etc. If anyone has any knowledge, please feel free to share here.

Nanchang's (KHN) Changbei Airport opened its second terminal earlier this year. I have been through there a couple of times and I am not sure if the first terminal that opened about 10 years ago is still used. It is a small airport considering Nanchang is the Jiangxi Provincial capital. The new terminal has one main concourse and the airport still has only one runway.

As I live in China, ( Beijing) I tend to keep an eye out with whats going on in the aviation sector, and it's so fantastic that there will be so much money spent on airports in China over the next 10 years, they want to upgrade and create over 100 new airports around the country!!

However I think that the government will have to look again at this number, only this week the train network is going all out for the new year in JAN and trains between Beijing and Shanghai - the fast train - over 300 KMPH have increased to 14 per day (M-F) and have reduced ticket cost by up to 50% with a journey time of 4.5 hrs! instead of the normal 14hrs.!!

In Jan myself and my partner will return home for the China New Year to a city called Wuxi near Shanghai, last year we flew done but this year we are taking the train.

Beijing new International airport is all ready under construction I have yet to go and have a look but will do soon, and this week Shanghai PVG has been given the green light to construct 2 more runways and a new control tower by 2015 to meet the increase demand of people and cargo.

with a lot of the airlines of China ordering lots of small planes like 737's and A320 nero's etc they must want to fly them somewhere in the country but we will just have to wait and see.

I don't know so much about the main airports you asked about, but I can tell you some info about Xiamen (XMN).
As you may already know, the airport in Xiamen (Gaoqi Airport) is situated at the central island, close to the city center. While its very convenient to get to the city center by car/taxi (it can take 10-15 minutes with no traffic), it makes it nearly impossible for any large expansion, like adding a new runway. The airport also lacks good access with public transportation.

Because of this, a decision to build a new airport outside the city island. The new airport will in its final stage have four runways, take up an area of 17.5 square km, as well as being capable of handling the A380;

To cope up with demand until the new airport is finished in 2019, the government has decided to build a new terminal XMN, which is scheduled to be finished in 2014, and will only handle domestic flights;

When the new Xiang'an Airport is finished it will handle many domestic flights and almost all international flights, while the current Gaoqi Airport will serve as a smaller city airport handling only domestic flights, similar to the SHA/PVG split in Shanghai.



The red circle is the current Gaoqi airport, while the black circle of the island of Dadeng is the location of the future Xiang'an Airport.

Shantou Waisha Airport (SWA) will officially end commercial operations next week and flights will be transferred to Jieyang Chaoshan Airport (code unknown) in the neighbouring city of Jieyang.

In April I went through several Chinese airports (PEK, GUI, HKG, CAN), KMG (Kunming Wujiaba Airport) with about 20mio passengers /year. This was exciting because this airport is in the last stage of activity, nearing completion of new state of the art Changshui airport http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=401560&page=9. taking into consideration political issues and NIMBY movement about second rwy in my hometown airport PRG, with about 60% of performance and in fact two runways. Local authorities of Yunan province are very proud of it and supporting KMG to be a southwest gate to China. With a hardware they get this month its doable..

Spending almost one week with my colleague flying for Chinese airlines, the biggest hurdle in aviation in China is military control of airspace which cost a lot on delays, route changes and even cancellation of flights. There are also huge reserves in training efficiency comparing to European standards.

Thanks for the updates. I knew about the knew Kunming airport as well - very impressive, and apparently one of the fastest new-build facilities ever built (they started work in 2009!)

I didn't know Xiamen was building a new airport, but it makes sense... judging from Google Maps aerials, the current facility is pretty space-constricted. As I said, Dalian (DLC) is the same way - wondering if they have any plans for expansion or a new airport.

The growth of Chinese airports is really staggering.... that's why I was curious to hear about any other expansion programs at second-tier airports that might be in the works.

You meant 14 per day non-stop/fastest? There were only 2 non-stop per day when the line opened in July. The line will run up to 92 trains per day (one direction). 300km/h trains will increase from 39 to 65 while the 250 km/h trains from 25 to 27. Also, I thought the price was only reduced by 5%, not 50%.

Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Rail to Add Extra Trains

Starting December 12th, the China Railway Bureau will increase the number of bullet trains on the Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Rail.

The train departures will add up to 78 on workdays, 85 on weekends and 92 during the peak travel periods (Spring Festival, summer holiday and holiday weeks).

Among the 92 trains, 65 will operate at a speed of 300 km/h, while 27 will operate at a speed of 250km/h.

Thanks for the comments. While I was in China I saw a story on the CCTV English channel discussing high-speed rail and how it had driven airlines off the WUH-CAN route. The airlines were expecting PEK-SHA/PVG to remain a viable route, since the Shanghai urban area is so large (so getting to a rail station can take longer than an airport for some people) and the distance is greater, so flying is still just about competitive with the train.

I know CTU and CGK have both built new runways in the last year. When I was at CTU in May the new runway didn't appear to be in use - the taxiways connecting it to the older part of the airport were blocked off by barriers.
