How Long Did Continental Fly The 737-100?

When did they retire them?What kept them flying this old bird when there were much improved 737's and A320's in market?

Those 737-100's were inherited from the People Express merger in 1987.

CO also received a large fleet of 737-200s from the Frontier Airlines acquisition the same year.
