In the midst of Frontier and Southwest Airlines fracas seeking authority to offer service between Chicago and Cancun Mexico, Aerovias de Mexico, S.A. de C.V. (dba Aeromexico) today notified the DOT of its own intention to launch service on the route.

Aeromexico which was recently designated in the market by the Mexican DGAC states it plans to offer “multiple weekly flights” and seeks expeditious handling of its application by the DOT to allow it to market such service immediately.

Definitely sounds like a knee-jerk reaction to WN joining the Chicago-CUN route. Not sure if they see F9 as a threat on this one.

My posts/replies are strictly my opinion and not that of any company, organization, or Southwest Airlines.

I see Aeromexico is trying to get a piece of the pie of the Chicago-CUN market too. Mexicana was the last Mexican airline to operate the route. I wonder if AM's application will get Y4 thinking of starting MDW-CUN since they already have the authority.

I'm surprised it took AM this long to jump into the CHI-CUN market.

Quite frankly, I am unsure as to what Aeroméxico is after with this application.

The Miami-Cancùn route, which was very profitable to Mexicana, is being ditched by AM after merely 6 months of operations. Officially we have no resumption date. Does that make sense ?? What are the folks at the marketing department doing ? Cancun is the single most important entry point for travellers from the States to Cuba and Mexicana was excellent at capitalising that market in Florida.
If Aeroméxico cannot make Miami to Havana (via Cancùn) work... why bother with Chicago already served by AA and UA on top of the new applicants ??
