Great Lakes Aviation Loads More MSP Flights

Just searched on the ZK flight schedule and it appears that they've added an MSP-PIR flight starting Feb. 1st. Schedule is:

MSP-PIR 1525-1700

PIR-MSP 1233-1408

Is this a link up for the aircraft at MSP doing MSP-DVL so it can get back to base at DEN? Does anyone know when ZK is supposed to start more of their MSP EAS flying? Any comments would be helpful. Thanks!

Peace

Interesting, since they don't have an agreement with DL I wonder how well these flights will work.

If Im not mistaken, they did negotiate an agreement with DL, and I believe Dl was instrumental in getting ZK to apply for the EAS ops in these cities.

Yeah, an easy and logical one at that! ZK already has the station set up in PIR, so its a quick add on! It also is a way for the company to rotate aircraft through the DEN system without having to do HON-DVL reposition flights in the middle of the night! Word has it by March or April, expect to see at least 5 or 6 cities up and running out of MSP! We also brought back another lease returned 1900 that I guess we bought outright from Raytheon!

Not true, ZK and DL will have a full interline agreement in place! It will include accruing of DL and Sky Team miles, baggage transfers, as well as the sales of tickets on DL.com. Regional elite is currently handling ZK in MSP and DVL!

The key words are "will have". But until it has actually been signed and put in place there is no agreement. There must be a reason why this hasn't happened yet.

However, according to ZK's website, they are hiring FT and PT agents in MSP and Station Managers in MSP and DVL. Also JMS is starting soon or already has.

May I suggest that when talking about small airports the name of the city be used rather than the airport code. DVL shows up as Devils Lake when scrolled over but when doing the scroll over thing for PIR, HON, and JMS nothing appears and I doubt many people know what airport those codes refer to.

INL rolls over to Lakes on April 1st. That is what the station personel have said. It will be a Lakes station, so no more regional elite up there. What we hear around the crew lounge is that SUX, INL, BRD, HIB, TVF, FOD, MCW, PIR, DVL, and JMS will all be going to Lakes. If that is the case, Lakes would need to have at least 7 or 8 planes dedicated to MSP to cover these routes. Do they have that kind of availablity in their fleet?

Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing! It's a bonus if you can fly the plane again!!

My understanding is the reason it is not in place is because they are still working on making the reservation software compatible with each others airlines. Remember, ZK started MSP earlier then intended as a courtesy to the Devils Lake community. Originally they did not plan on serving MSP until April, so that is why some of the perks (interline agreements) are not quite in place yet.

Souix Falls is a new one to me, but the rest I can see going over to ZK. Their is also mention of Rhinelander, WI and Ironwood, MI going over to ZK as well, now that Frontier (Chautauqua) wants to drop them. Strong and reliable rumors going around ZK is that we intend to receive an additional 6 EMB-120s from Skywest, which will free up 6 or so 1900s in DEN to come to MSP. ZK has also just bought outright 2 additional 1900s and they are currently up in CYS undergoing heavy maintenance. Upper management has suggested MSP could see up to 12 aircraft being based in MSP with the possibility of EMB-120s being thrown into the mix at a later date! Either way, it sounds like ZK is committing themselves to MSP for the long haul!

That is true, so I think it is just the reservations/miles part of the interline agreement that are not up and running yet!

I know for a fact DL is already transferring bags for them to and from DL flights. Its most likely being done the old way all on paper since technically there's no electronic link-up but its being done somehow. All their transfer bags are stagged with where most of the other DCI stuff is staged. Down on the end of B. There is no real offload report. From what I was told, the station calls MSP and let's them know how many bags are on the a/c and if there are any local bags or not.

I also know they are hiring so the Regional Elite thing is temporary.

I was lucky enough to fly out of DVL the day after they started service to MSP. Everything went very smoothly with the Regional Elite people advising the newly hired ZK personnel on what to do. They hand wrote the bag tags in DVL and I had to go to a Delta Counter to receive my connecting ticket. Everything went very smoothly and everyone was extremely happy and cheery. If I had a tight connection things might worry me, but I had plenty of time.

Also, on my online Itinerary with Delta the flight does show up as being operated by ZK. What I want to know is are we going to see an agreement with DL much like UA has with ZK in DEN or are we going to see something similar to what Big Sky did for DL in BOS?

Thanks for the comments guys!

Chances are the ZK agreement with DL is going to be a codeshare similar to their current agreement with UA rather than a full capacity-purchase agreement like DL had with Big Sky. This way ZK won't have to repaint any aircraft into DL colors so they can freely rotate aircraft throughout the system instead of keeping some aircraft dedicated to a specific hub.

I'd take the awe of understanding over the awe of ignorance any day.

Sioux CIty (SUX) subsidized EAS contract flying was awarded to American Eagle with AA* flights SUX-ORD. If Great Lakes is to pick up MSP-SUX it will be unsubsidized flying.

Great Lakes did indeed bid for Ironwood and Rhinelander, and they were the only carrier to bid. I think that the DoT said that ZK's 3x/day bid for RHI was not adequate for traffic and may request that they fly 4x/day, but other than that I think ZK is pretty much a shoe-in for IWD and RHI flights out of the new MSP base, too.

RE is all temporary. RE is supporting TDY ZK employees until they get their own staff (and SIDA badges).

I fly back to DVL on Monday and I will make sure to post how things are going now that they've had ~3 weeks to work out the bugs. Should be interesting to see how things go when I'm in BOS as I would be willing to bet that I'll be one of the first passengers they've had to deal with since the changeover to ZK on the MSP-DVL route. Got less than an hour in MSP, so things will go a bit quicker than DVL-MSP-BOS where I had 1:45 layover in MSP. I'll keep y'all posted!

Peace

I think the only thing left is the sales of tickets on DL website and through DL. Much like UA and F9 do, I believe ZK is will have a sales agreement with DL. Regional Elite is temporary and I know for a fact, Feb 1st is when DVL switches over to ZK handling. I am not sure when MSP will switch to ZK, but I can't see RE being in their past April 1st!

Really glad everything went smooth. I know ZK put a lot into opening MSP, so I am glad to see some positive feedback from it. I hope tomorrow goes smooth for you too! I just operated my first flight out of MSP up to DVL last night!

To answer your question, expect the agreement between DL and ZK to be like UAs. ZK will continue to operate independently and in their own paint scheme, but have an interline agreement in place. You should be able to buy ZK tickets on Delta.com, as well as receive all of the perks you would get with flying on DL or their regional partners!

Yeah sorry about that, I got my Sioux's mixed up! I did remember SUX getting AE, which is why I was slightly surprised to hear that rumor! But I guess you never know!

Going slightly OT: The March issue of Airways (which I received on Friday) features Great Lakes in Airways' coach flyer column.

An Airways reporter flew ZK LAS-DEN via Page, Arizona and Moab / Canyonlands, Utah. The reporter had nothing but positive things to say about the flight, especially the scenery on the LAS-PGA and PGA-CNY legs, and the friendliness of ZK's employees. The magazine will be on newsstands soon; it's definitely worth picking up if you are a ZK fan.

As a MSP resident, I'm planning to take ZK MSP-PIR-DEN sometime this spring / summer. Hopefully my trip will go as well as the Airways reporter's trip did....
