INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares what is for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Non-daily operations create fractional weekly service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. If a flight operated 5 days out of 7, it would show 0.8 flights.

WHY ARE THERE WEIRD FREQUENCIES AT Macedonian Airlines (Greece)">IN FAR AWAY MONTHS FOR LCCs?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. Their schedules may also end mid-month. If B6 loads their schedule until Jan15, all flights in Janaury will show half frequency because of the way the report is created.

WHY IS A WHOLE AIRLINE'S SCHEDULE SHOWN AS CHANGING FOR A FUTURE MONTH?
Similarly to the previous question, some airlines load their schedule from nothing inside the 9 month window of this report. When their schedule is extended it will show as new service because there was no previous schedule to compare to. In some instances I will show a more valid comparison against another period.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE PINNACLE
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THE FREQUENCY DOESN'T SHOW A CHANGE, E.G. 4>4
This happens as a result of rounding. There is a change in service that is large enough to be listed, but through rounding it does not appear.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

NOTE: There may or may not be an update next week as I'm not sure I will have internet.

UA SFO-PSP FEB 7>6 No surprise. This was an over-kill response to VX and their 1 daily

UA SFO-GEG FEB 3>1.0 I'll check our schedule. This doesn't seem right. Normally we are at 2 daily.

I think a second frequency is operated by a SkyWest CRJ in February.

So from the looks of this, US will be nearly completely out of LGA In AUG except for the Hub flights. The question I have is why there is a reduction in DCA frequency as well? When are the second wave of DCA flights going to be added?

And no net flights being added in either CLT or PHL either? The extra RJ's coming out of LGA have to go somewhere? But where?

Actually all frequency's are operated by us. SkyWest has always operated GEG since it was started from SFO. Mainline has never been on this route in recent times. But since the launch it has, other then the occasional few days, never been under 2 daily.

Will you watch the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions on Sunday? Only if coach Eric Mangini resigned after a loss.

Strange.

Ask around and you hear "cash cow" and "100% full" on this route -- since the Norfolk-to-DC Amtrak line -- going through Richmond -- takes all day. Conversations also have this route upgauging from an E70 to a 319.

Perhaps all those full planes aren't pulling in any cash.

But they beat the 145XRs I've flown on IAH-IAD -- so I'll keep my mouth shut.

DCA-ORF was a great route pre-9/11. It has been hurt like all the other short hauls since the advent of TSA.

It's strange that they'd keep MKE-FNT for the winter and then drop it given that this has to be the worst time of the year for the route. Then again, perhaps their modeling didn't account for the impact of the cuts in connecting routes. MKE-LAS likely goes out full consistently but I bet the yields aren't good. Do the ERJ's stick around just to serve MKE-GRR/BNA/CMH/IND/OMA/EWR?

Hmm, that whiz-bang new computer software they keep talking about for determining routes must have hiccupped.

Pfft. That stuff will be gone before you know it.

If they are truly becoming a ULCC they better figure out how to make that type of market work.

Well going 6xER170 to 4x319 would be an overall increase in seats, so maybe it is indeed doing well?

MKE-LAS likely goes out full consistently but I bet the yields aren't good.

This route was actually flown as a redeye on the E90 so it may or may not have been full. With the connectivity they have in DEN I guess I'm not too surprised given the amount of airplane time a better 2x daily schedule would have used up.

I would say it was either a glitch, or that it is ending

Thanks...I searched a couple of weekday March dates and found ExpressJet, not SkyWest (my bad) is operating this flight. Looks like it's safe for now. I believe PIA has some kind of agreement to cover expenses, plus Caterpillar biz travel probably keeps it profitable.

VB discontinuing the US? What's going on there? All pulled down for the Summer?

This must be an error, their website shows the opposite. You can book flights on their website up until the first week in July for all their destinations.

This is what VB is flying for the Summer to the U.S. (What comes up on their website for June/July.

That's really strange. It's hub to hub connection and the planes are usually full. Why would they cut the frequency?

Well, it doesn't seem out of character for US to operate high frequency to/from the hubs this way:

Well, they were operating 21 only to use slots. 10 is still a lot.

Might still see some changes there, though.

LGA-PIT with 7 is still weird. I think they still have too many slots.

It appears that UA is only flying once per week for February only, BUT there are all sorts of weird things going on between the CO and UA codes so it could simply be moving to a CO code. I have no idea why they do these things. I'd watch ua.com

No idea. They might also be changing how many months in advance they sell their schedule through GDS. Hard to say.

From what I've read and heard, LGA-PHL was one of the only profitable routes US ran out of LGA. If the flights remain full purely out of O&D, and they make money, why not keep them?

I would think that if US dropped the shuttle, AA or DL would pick it up, if it is indeed a moneymaker.

LGA-PIT I'm more confused about.

It would be more accurate to say, "it lost the least". That was mostly because it was the shortest route they flew and thus cost the least to operate and yet utilize the slots.

Quoting HPRamper (Reply 22):

There is virtually no O&D between LGA and PHL. It is all connecting traffic of mostly low yield.

Quoting HPRamper (Reply 22):

The shuttles have never really been moneymakers and certainly haven't done well since Acela and 9/11. They exist more as a way to lock in business traveler loyalty for other things. Airlines don't make money on short-haul any more.

And no net flights being added in either CLT or PHL either? The extra RJ's coming out of LGA have to go somewhere? But where?

They could just be going away.

This is very unlikely. Most of the flights in LGA are contract flights, and the US contract with Republic and Air Wisconsin has a minimum number of flights that they must operate. If all of these 140 slots flights or so (you can double that number for departures), just go away, then the regional affiliates aren't operating enough flights per their contract with US, and then US could run into a potential legal issue with either of those carriers.

I don't know if the Mesaba/Colgan at risk flying used US slots or Colgan slots. If it is the US slots, then those likely would just go away. But the rest of the slots involve Dash 8's, E170s, and CRJs, and though the Dash 8's are wholly owned, most of the 170s and CRJs are still under contract, and that flying cannot just simply go away without a change to contracts.

27 wn676 : Maybe the flights actually feed a lot of traffic through PHL? I mean, look at PHX-TUS...
28 FlyPeoria : When I looked at March dates (on weekdays), the flight was still in the schedule, so perhaps this is an anomaly or some kind of shift to the CO code
29 smoot4208 : Sorry, but you're going out on a limb on that one. LGA-PHL does fine.
30 HPRamper : DFW might be west of PIA, but it's not a western hub any more than say, MSP is. Notably closer to the East coast than the West.
31 yellowtail : You might want to check with WN, CM, ANA and quite a few others about that
