Hello Anetters,

according to theeksource.com EK flew many extra rotations recently. Here is lineup of what I have found

PER 12/18/11; 01/07/12
DEL daily 1 extra flight from 01/02/12 to 01/07/12
MNL 01/06/12
LHE 01/03/12; 01/06/12
BKK 12/16/11; 01/03/12
SIN 12/17/11

All fights operated on 773s. EK received quite a few new frames recently, so apparently they have spare capacity before these birds are used for new routes / ramping up frequency or equipment changes.

Any ideas why they operate so many extra flights and if these flights were full?
I understand an extra rotation has to do with demand, but this demand does not build up suddenly. Based on bookings and scheduled flights is it realistic to have so many overbookings or so much sudden demand that an additional flight is scheduled on short notice?

Or were these flights scheduled longer in advance and are labeled extra rotations because they were only flown on these days.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Some of them are because other planes having technical issues. Like that plane in SYD. that create the extra rotation and I think they ferry the plane back to DXB.

Some of them could be because extra demand.

In November I looked into booking flights from PER. I checked EK, and on one of my return flights I looked at (January 7th), there was scheduled a 4 numbered flight (it was either EKX420 or EKX424, where X is a number which I forget). So that extra rotation was scheduled far in advance. I don't know why there was an extra rotation on that particular day.
