I have an idea for an airline: TranscaL Airways. It's based at SFO and flys 717-200s to just about any city in California with an airport, including smaller ones like Fresno and Monterey. Tell me what you think.

Think about it, do people really want to go to there places, and frequently for that matter, when for very cheap and not a long journey, people can get to these close places using other methods!

Well...maybe not with the 717 (just a little too large), but a 50-seater RJ (CRJ/ERJ), it might work. I think that if you were flying out of LAX (or maybe even Long Beach!) you'd have a much larger population base, as well as a better passenger draw. Maybe:
LAX-PSP (Palm Springs)
LAX-SAN (San Diego)
LAX-SFO (San Fran.)
LAX-SMF (Sacramento)
LAX-MRY (Monterrey)
LAX-TVL (S. Lake Tahoe)
LAX-RNO (Reno)
LAX-???--Napa Valley

Don't base any airline out of SFO, if you want on-time performance of better than 70%.

I agree...LA Basin has the population base, and Long Beach is the place...LAX is WAY too crowded as it is, and of course is much more expensive.
Regional jets are the way to go.

Most likely Trans States is going to get upset about having an airline named TransCal, but you never know.
