How big is the DL operation in MCO? it seems like that all of airside four at one point was all delta and now it is pretty empty expect for Virgin Atlantic, which is also handled by DL?

Well, its most certainly not what it was just 6 or so years ago. Back then there were many many markets served by CR2s and 145s up and down the NE and to certain markets in the Gulf. There was also much more capacity between Atlanta. At one point, there were 2x daily 777s along with multiple daily 764s and 763s. It is now all 752s and 753s. DL on a whole has greaty reduced capacity into Florida. With the abscene of 762s and 764s, markets like TPA is down quite a bit.

Way, way down from its peak especially when you consider that PMNW operations are now a part of Delta and are handled, for the most part, out of one pier of Airside 4.

I remember flying to MCO in the mid-90s on Delta Express which occupied the whole pier that became AirTran's (now empty). After moving here, I also endured the asylum that was the Delta Connection operation, flying a couple of times to Indianapolis and back on Chautauqua and once to HSV and back on OH. I also flew to/from Atlanta on 772 and 763 equipment. I also flew back and forth to BOS on Song a couple of times.

All of that is long gone now. There is the occasional CR2, but other than that it is narrow body equipment going to Delta hubs.

Yes, I believe MCO was officially a DL hub until 2008. It was never really a traditional DL mainline hub, though. Most of the flights in the 90s and early 2000s were Delta Express, on ratty old all-Y 732s. That was fine when the main competitors were just WN and Metrojet. Then when B6 significantly upped the ante on the Northeast-Florida routes Delta unveiled Song, which then assumed much of the MCO mainline flying. Towards the end you also had a ton of RJ ops to various Southern markets, as well as intra-Florida stuff. Today they just serve MCO from hubs and a handful of major focus cities. Virtually all of the former Delta Express, Song, and Delta Connection markets have been picked up by B6, WN, FL, and/or G4 (from SFB). I think it will be fun to watch the showdown between B6 and a newly-international WN from MCO (which is their only Florida crew base) in coming years. MCO already has far better domestic and international links than ever before!


Flying in the middle seat of coach is much better than not flying at all!

We also had FRA service for a while out of MCO and a codeshare with VS which had a DL F/A on board. There is still a SkyClub there.
Someone on here said that WN has been cutting MCO-I'm not sure if that's true or not. As of 12/11, WN had 101 daily flights out of MCO (not counting AirTran)

Really?? I guess that makes sense when you have 13X 757 a day to ATL and a few 753s from DTW.

I can remember flying MIA-MCO-MSY on DL with M80's in early 1994 with a tight connection, seemed they had plenty of gates and planes on the ground at that time.
