Service ends April 2nd.

I never expected this route to last.

This shouldn't be a surprise. AA cannot seem to make secondary markets work from ORD. (I wouldn't call ILM a secondary market, however.) They only have about 30 domestic destinations served by mainline from ORD, everything else (including several primary markets, such as ATL,CLT,RIC,JAX,IAH) is on Eagle or Connection. Kind of a shame, I actually preferred flying AA over UA when connecting through ORD, then AA axed ALB, and was forced to fly UA through ORD. I feel like WN's stronghold at MDW may have taken a toll on AA at ORD as well. Kind of sad.

My opinion is that once AA gets its costs under control through the bankruptcy process, ORD will become a better hub. For the amount of traffic that goes through ORD, both AA and UA don't need a great number of larger narrobodies, say 140+ seats. They need a lot of aircraft between 90 and 125 seats.

The A319s that start arriving in 2013 will alleviate some of the problems. Presumably, the scope clause in the pilots' contract (or mainline pay scales), will allow AA to use Embrear 170/190 or Canadair C-Series on routes that are now Eagle/Connection with the CRJ 700 or smaller.

Part of the problem goes back to AA returning the TWA 717s to Boeing and then retiring the F100s, as maintenance costs became more problematic. That left a whopping gap between the CRJ 700 and the MD-80. When the F100s left, a CRJ seated 70, while the MD-80 seated 129. Now, the CRJ seats 66, with the first class cabin, while the MD-80 seats 140.

That is a very big presumption....one that I would not make.

That's okay, ILM travelers will still be able to get to ORD on AA through their future CLT hub.

Bingo..and although the discussion by other posters about the F100's and B717s are relevant, one can even look back to the 70's and 80's when the 727-023 played a significant role on a number of flights out of ORD (AA, and UA and TW 727-100's) That 96 seat (as I recall) aircraft was perfect for a number of routes back then such as ALB (as USairALB points out)
even to smaller cities such as FWA, RST, ROC and a lot of others.

The 319's will fill the bill perfectly!

funny, but true   This kind of illustrates the need for a hub in the southeast atlantic region so they can serve cities like ILM. CLT is better positioned to serve places like this more than ORD or DFW
