I belive that they were used on the poloar flights over the north pole. Currently there is 1 left in the fleet at United. Aircrat with nose number 4445 is a 747SP that is being leased to NASA for the SOFIA project. There was a second one that was in the United fleet (not in service), but I belived that was retired or sold off a few months ago. Can anyone confirm that?

They were flown from EWR-NRT and EWR-LHR as well as JFK-LHR and JFK-GIG or GRU. I assume they were flown from SFO and LAX to NRT and HKG, as well as LAX-AKL and LAX-SYD. Occasionally they flew them from EWR-SFO once or twice a week as a placement flight. I miss those things. Glad I got my chance to ride on them years ago from JFK to NRT as Pan Am- "China Clipper" and "Clipper Washington".

They also flew to LHR towards the end of their career with United. I flew LHR-LAX with N144UA in Oct 92. I remember also they flying a LAX-GRU nonstop route for a short while. The last route SPs flew for UA was EWR-LHR which was replaced with the 777. The777Man
