Could this have something to do with Qatar going double daily to MXP as of May 1st?

EK keeps building on the third European departure bank at 3am. After LHR and LGW, the airline recently added flights to MAN, FRA and CDG. Now there's MXP and I would expect FCO and a couple of others to follow suit. DME, BHX and ZRH come to mind.

The return portion of these flights gets into DXB at the relatively quiet 7 - 8 pm time frame. I am fully expecting the airline to further strengthen ensuing connectivity in the 10 - 11 pm departure bank with a number of additional East Asia and Africa destinations.

Wow! It seems like Italy is an incredibly strong market for EK. Amazing to see this airline (which, as far as we know, is highly profitable) continuing to aggressively grow in Europe despite the ongoing Eurozone/E.U. crisis.

Any idea if those rumors of new ORD service may amount to anything?

I am quite surprised that MXP capacity keeps being increased, I've been there a few times in the last year or so and the loads on the M/E flights were dire. A dozen people getting on a Saudi A320, not many more than that on EY, about 100 on QR and only about the same on EK. Presumably that can't be indicative of the market and was just a few low days, surely?

^^ Airlines don't just throw capacity at a market that has no strategic importance. Given that the M/E carriers are still fighting it out and continue to add capacity seems to point to the experiences you had being the exception, not the norm.

I would expect FCO

FCO should get the 3rd daily by September, already TBC anyway.

Just a little question in between,
what are the times of In / Outbound waves at DXB ?
I know theres one at like 1 - 3 am and one at 7 - 9 am... are there more?
Per example ZRH has got one EK arriving in DXB around 7 am and one at around Midnight... what would be the additional flight ?

Nice to see the Airbus pilots getting a new layover, these days with all the 777's arriving and being used for expansion or A330 upgrades, they are mostly stuck doing turns!

Definitely low days. I've worked many a MXP flight and it's chocka most of the time.

For the DXB - Europe sectors, the main departure bank is 7 - 10 am. All European destinations (LHR, LGW, MAN, BHX, GLA, NCL, DUB, CPH, LED, DME, HAM, FRA, DUS, MUC, AMS, CDG, NCE, ZRH, GVA, VIE, PRG, VCE, MXP, FCO, MAD, ATH, IST, MLA, LCA and soon BCN) have at least one departing flight in this bank. All of these flights return to DXB in the midnight arrivals bank.

The second European departure wave is at 2.30 - 5 pm with service to LHR, LGW, MAN, BHX, DME, HAM, FRA, DUS, MUC, CDG, ZRH, VIE, MXP, FCO, IST and soon GLA, VCE and MAD. These flights return to DXB in the airline's main early morning arrivals bank.

EK has been steadily building the new 3 am departure bank, which started of with LHR and LGW flights, and has seen the addition of MAN, FRA, CDG and now MXP. FCO should follow soon as well as a number of other European cities. All of these flights arrive back in DXB around 7 - 8 pm.

Ah I get it! Thanks
so in case EK will make ZRH triple daily the schedule would be about the same as MXP?
That would mean DXB dep like LX (arrival in ZRH around 6-7am) and departure again at 9am in ZRH!
That's insane, daily 1000 seats from and to MXP only for EK...

This will be an interesting development. Although the MXP catchment area is quite large and includes TRN for longhaul, Northern Italy has come to a standstill with the current economic crisis so a June timing might not be ideal. My bet is the flight will operate, then be suspended shortly after the summer peak and be re-instated later.

Thanks HB-IWC! Are you going to do a hub analysis again any time soon?
