I was looking at Flightradar24.com and noticed a very interesting thing at Palma de Mallorca airport this night. 18 Air Berlin aircrafts in row departed from PMI.

(see the picture on the link)

Is this a normal sight as PMI is an Air Berlin base and regular scheduled Sunday's flights or something else is a meter of question.

thanks

They have a "hub" arrangement at PMI so not unusual.

Looking at the departures for PMI from 6PM local time tonight it seems normal enough, the flights are:

Frankfurt AB 9851
Hamburg AB 9333
Dusseldorf AB 9865
Hanover AB 9583
Munich AB 9621
Leipzig/Halle AB 9717
Cologne AB 9251
Muenster AB 9483
Dresden AB 9187
Stuttgart AB 9389
Paderborn AB 9827
Nuremberg AB 9431

This is according to flightstats, so forgive me if any are wrong.

Thank you.

Anyhow, it must be pretty nice to see outbound 12 Air Berlin aircrafts from same airport and nearly same time headed for Germany

Air Berlin are the largest airline at PMI, it's not uncommon to see more than 20 AB aircraft on the ground at the same time during the summer. Aside from the fact that Mallorca is Germany's most popular overseas tourist destination, AB also use it as a hub with flights to other Spanish destinations. There are usually 5-6 flights per day using the A333 during the summer too.

AB also send the A333 to AGP in summer - is that one coming directly from Germany or from PMI with all the transit passengers?

Here's AB's total one-directional (so double for total) capacity (seats) from PMI between 2005 and 2012:

2005: 2926163
2006: 3145801
2007: 3573388
2008: 3985473
2009: 3966154
2010: 4157307
2011: 2834250
2012: 3732171

Of course, PMI is highly summer-seasonal, with AB's one-way capacity in January 162,372 versus 423,246 in July.

In 2012, its routes and annual one-directional capacity/route are:

Air Berlin is very successful as the national carrier of Mallorca. If they wouldn't burn that money again for the ego of their managers to compete with Lufthansa they had a chance to survivie.
