Today I was looking at the OneWorld route map, which is usually very accurate and gets the routes directly from the GDS, and I noticed that there were two non-stop routes from MAD which don't have any direct service yet: SFO and LAS. I've looked at the dates the non-stop flights will operate and I've seen that these flights are bookable at www.iberia.com.
The flights are operated as a stop between MAD and LAX. Non-stop flights are bookable for a 4-5 days trip to SFO or LAS from MAD. The legs between SFO/LAS and LAX are only for positioning the aircraft back to MAD. Passengers on board the scheduled MAD-LAX or LAX-MAD flights these particular days will have an unusual stop. Finally, the poor passengers on board the MAD-MIA flight on May 23 will be routed via... LAS.
IB6123 MAD 0945 - 1715 LAS 346 29MAY2012
IB6128 LAS 1845 - 1440 MAD 346 29MAY2012
IB6125 MAD 0955 - 1725 LAS 346 29MAY2012
IB6126 LAS 1855 - 1450 MAD 346 29MAY2012
A photo of an Iberia aircraft at SFO will be unusual, but maybe in the future IB could try to operate a regular MAD-SFO route some times a week. However, two A340-600 from IB at LAS at the same time is something that we may not see never again.

I don't see IB flying to SFO as there is a very weak Oneworld presence here. The Oneworld carriers that fly here can independently, were as IB from MAD wouldn't have the demand. But, I could see IB doing a number of charters in the future when SF host America's Cup.

Are these flights already partially pre-booked for a certain tour operator, or are they wide open public charters for anyone to book? Sounds interesting!

It will be nice to see a pic of an IB346 with the casinos in the background.
I don´t IB will operate Schedule to SFO, but maybe increase freqs to LAX could be... Right now they don´t have any plane to upgrade or create new routes but maybe when they start getting the A330´s they could start adding freqs or opening some new routes...
I also hope they will add more West Africa routes slowly like they are doing with ACC and NCK.

SFO would be a great destination for IB to add to its network. This might sound a little odd, but could IB operating the charter flights to get a feel of how non-stop scheduled flights from MAD-SFO-MAD would preform?
