Hmmm....is this part of the regional restructuring or the beginning of a death spiral? DAM should be a regional route but I understand with the situation going on there.

When Middle Eastern Airline shut down GVA it shows that they're not doing things right. Shame that they are shutting down so many routes - looks either like the beggining of the end, or a good way to stem heavy losses on poor routes.

It's hard to know which one... But the situation with Gulf Air is not sustainable. There are way too many airlines in the Gulf Region.. Too much competition. There is Gulf Air, Emirates, Etihad, Qatar, Jazeera, Nas Air, Fly Dubai, RAK Air, Air Arabia, and many others. Not sustainable.

What about Yemenia, Kuwait Airways and Oman Air?

Seems to me these are, along with Gulf Air, the weakest players - as concerns 'National Carrier' - in the Arabian Peninsula.

Situation in Greece is very bad... deep crisis and inestability
-Damascus.... no need to talk about this....
-KUL.... with so many flights from EK, QR..... it´s impossible to compete...
-Milan... exactly the same than KUL....

I think they are doing a good job axing them and they should focus more in regional market than long haul like many airlines in Europe did years ago. Regional market can very profitable if you position yourself properly. Middle east is growing at a nice rate and people is eager to travel around.

After scaling back operations (Athens, Geneva, Milan) Gulf Air will keep flying to London, Frankfurt, Paris, Copenhagen, Rome, Istanbul (and Larnaca) in Europe.

This isnt a normal drop of routes. Its one month till the route ends...
That tells me that the routes are really really poor performers and that GF is bleeding red ink.

Manama used to be the finance hub. those days are long gone.

Now no more traffic to Geneva. Thats a shocker. the rest I can see when an airline downsize but geneva from the middle east ouch...

I think this isnt the last cut either. the more they cut the worse the other already moneyloosing longhauls will do.

Gulf Air have been a small player for a long time now at ATH , the economic issues in Greece is not the real reason. Their Middle Eastern neighbours EY/EK/QR are pushing GF out . Gulf Air used to be a great airline but in recent years they just couldnt get back on track .

They ditched DUB and then EY came in and made it boom , now we have EK also . That tells us alot.

Still will be a shame not to see the GF livery at ATH .

I read somewhere (but I can't remember where, sorry  ) that EK were delinking ADD and EBB.

Both destinations are to be served by A332s, according to the article that I read. Is this likely to have influenced the decision by GF to discontinue EBB?

With all these longer distant routes in their network being axed, it will be interesting to see where these 20 A330-300's will be deployed whent hey arrive in 2014 and four years later the airline is due to receive 16 787-8!

Im not sure the airline will still exist in 2014. It has been in survival mode for the last few years now.

And to think GF was the gold standard of all Gulf Airlines. Had hubs in DOH, BAH, AUH, MCT. Not only are they down to one hub in BAH, but they have been overtaken by upstarts like EK, Etihad, QR, etc.

It's condemned to a bit player now. Death is the only alternative.

Love the picture.... totally brings out your point. And of course, EK has the biggest tail.

GF's GVA (and MXP) service only started last March, so it didn't even last one year. GVA was only 3 x week and it was operated by a wet-leased PrivatAir BBJ (737-700) with 2 class J and Y service. It was probably quite costly due to the wet-lease arrangement and there's a huge amount of competition with daily widebodies on all the other Gulf-based carries.

The PrivatAir BBJ that's been operating the GVA route on the inaugural flight March 29, 2011.

Route since 1983

Athens (12MAR)

It first started in 1976, then stopped for a few years, but has since been operating.

GF was the first Arabian Gulf carrier to start services to Austrialia as well.

Sad to see the once proud Golden Falcon reduced to a mere shade of former glory. But that's what strong competition, corruption and inept management will do for you.

On a side note, by Jun/Jul FRA and CDG routes will be increased from 7xw to 11xw and 10xw......on board A320 iso A332.

In this way only LHR gets GF's widebody in Europe since CDG (A320), FCO (A320), FRA (A320), LCA (A319/E90), CPH (B737), IST (A319) will be served with narrow.

Note that the A320 used on FRA/CDG is an A320ER with 110 seats.

The business class cabin will have 180 degree reclining flat bed seats and all seats will have personal tvs with AVOD so from an in-flight product stand point, its a big improvement.

110 seats sounds a bit low.
