Going back a few years I wonder if the owners of EK and DXB ever considered building an airport and simply 'pimping' it out for the worlds airlines to use as a point of transfer with each other ?

A truly gigantic global hub.

All the benefits of hundreds of millions of people passing through for various reasons (holidays, stop-overs, business etc) but without all the hassles and expense of running an airline ?

The possibilities are mind boggling but would it have resulted in more or less profit for the UAE considering EK's running costs and massive aircraft orders ?

Not sure if I understand your question given that EK is quite profitable so it makes sense for Dubai to have the airline, and secondly, without EK, why would airlines use to DXB to connect on a large scale instead of using their own hubs.

They were building it... it is called DWC... but now Dubai is running low on cash and they stop the development and only a few cargo operators there....

You can look in internet for Jebel Ali Airport.... it was HUGE....

By the way problem is that airlines are subjet to bilateral agreements between countries so they can´t fly freely wherever they want.... look for example EK to Canada, Korea, Japan... for cargo is much easier...

Alright look at it this way.

Imagine the mother of all joint-ventures.

In the case of the recent A380 AMS announcement imagine if the government of Dubai had said to KL we will provide you with an A380 to operate in KL livery with KL crews but we want 75% of the revenue.

In other words KL still makes a few euro's and everyone's a winner.

Imagine if this had always been the case with every flight in and out of DXB.

No squabbling over rights, aircraft orders, much greater potential for the UAE as everyone would be a winner.

The worlds airlines would still have their original networks and the UAE would be making a fortune without the expense.

Granted the logistics of timetables etc would be scary.

Why would Singapore Airlines or BA have an interest in hubbing their passengers in Dubai when what they really want is to fly them to LHR or Singapore ? The traffics right alone would be a nightmare. BY having its be their airline Dubai controls the whole process under one central umbrella.
