It looks like GA is struggling to redo it's I.T. system, and the airline has announced that it is delaying its entry until Q1 2013. GA really seems like it is trying to reform its former self, so I hope they can get this worked out and join SkyTeam.

Better than with other airlines that have so many delays one wonders if they will ever join. It implies a complete redo of certain IT infrastructure that takes months to purchase, months to verify it is set up properly, a month or two transition from the old software to the new... and only then could GA 'turn on' the Skyteam functionality.
A little long timeline... But not too bad.

IMHO, with GA, Skyteam is becoming far more competitive. Oh, there are regions they need a 'leg up' (Australia), but they are filling in the gaps nicely.

Well... If GA flies to 5 or 6 Australian destinations from their hub, there is no need for an Australian partner anymore (Delta already works together with Virgin Australia as far as I know), they will be able to cater 95% of the travelers.
Garuda serves just 3 Australian destinations: Sydney and Melbourne from both the Jakarta and Denpasar hubs, as well as Perth, only from Denpasar. A return to Brisbane has been contemplated several times but has so far not materialized.
DL and VA have ATI on TPAC routes to LAX, and open access to each others domestic networks, but VA doesn't have connectivity with the rest of SkyTeam. For example while SkyMiles and Velocity members have FF reciprocity, you couldn't earn FlyingBlue miles on a VA/DJ flight.
Indeed, for the record, QF code-shares with AF and MU and QFFF members earn miles on AZ flights. Therefore, if anything, QF is "closer" to ST in it's entirety than VA!!!!

Let's not forget that KE (SYD and BNE), MU (SYD and MEL) and CZ (SYD, MEL, BNE and PER) also serve Australia, so ST already has a presence on the Kangaroo Route. The only problem is that with KE it is necessary to over-night in ICN (albeit at KE's expense) and most people avoid CZ and MU unless the price is overwhelmingly compelling. Therefore ST is still much less attractive than OW (QF, BA, CX) and *A (SQ, TG etc) on this route.

I would not call it a "problem". On the contrary, its a big selling point for KE. Most customers traveling between Australia and different ports in Europe go out of their way to secure the complimentary Stop Over offered by KE and for those few customers that are in a "hurry" to reach the UK, as 28 April 2012, KE will offer same day connection service from Australia (SYD/BNE/MEL) to London-Gatwick, thus becoming the second airline (other than EK) that offers same day arrival in the UK.

Indeed it is! I remember posting this news a few months ago, but some frustrated "moderator" took the threat down because it had no reference. Moderators keep forgetting that we occupying management position have access to information before they become official news.
With Aerolineas Argentinas ( August 2012) and Garuda Indonesia (2013) joining, SkyTeam will consolidated its presence in the Australian market with a total of 8 carriers serving Australian ports and linking the country with Europe, Asia, North and South America.

Not entirely true, both CZ and MU are making a lot of improvements in their products and also have the really low fares to match them. Watch CZ growth in Australia in the next 5 years and you will also see a lot of improvements (including more constancy) in their product.

Going OT, but really?
How come the 6 biggest airlines between Australia and the UK are EK, QF, SQ, CX, BA and EY? Unless one has a desire to visit Singapore or Abu Dhabi most people (including leisure passengers) fly straight through.
I know it's different from the European end where the psychological distance to Australia means a lot more people stopover...
However, I'd forgotten the new LGW service, good point.

I don't doubt you, but they're not there yet. I have a large number of friends who live in Guangzhou and therefore fly CZ out of convenience: their message is don't unless necessary. Similarly I know someone who recently flew to Europe on MU and said next time they'd pay the $200 extra to go EK.
