DTW's New Terminal

NW is my airline of choice, and every time I fly into DTW I see that new Terminal, when is it supposed to be opened?

IS it only going to house NW jets, or will it serve the Saabs, Avros, and CRJs too?

Will it only house NW, or will the other airlines use it too?

What will they do to the old terminal?

I believe the Midfield Terminal is slated to open in January of 2002.

It will house all Northwest aircraft, as well as the Avro's, CRJ's, and Saabs. In fact, every aircraft, including the Saabs, will also have boarding bridges.

I think the new terminal will be Northwest and its codeshare partners exclusively. I can't remember if Continental will also relocate into the new terminal or not.

Eventually, the old terminal will be destroyed and a smaller version of the current midfield terminal will be built for the rest of the airline serving DTW.

I think the exact date for the "Edward H. McNamara" Terminal is January 20, 2002. I don't think CO is moving to the new terminal, and as for the international carriers, I don't know. I've heard yes and no, so I'll just have to wait.

Additionally, once NWA is moved out of the Davey Terminal it will be leveled, with the exception (I think) of the ticketing area. They will then begin constructing the new terminal there that looks like a small version of the big one. That should finish in 2006, at which time the rest of the airlines will move in, and the entire Smith Terminal will be leveled (thank God)!

Personally, I would love to take a bulldozer to concourse C. Anyone who has had the misfortune to have a flight out of there knows what I'm talking about!

The original opening date was December 9th, but according to the Detroit Free Press there was a delay in installing the ....surprise....automated baggage handling system.

Thus the new opening date is supposed to be in late January.

The terminal as it will look when fully completed looks very impressive.

Yes, DTW is reborn ... And its about f--king time!

The new midfield terminal will house Northwest, its communters and code share partners, including (I'm almsot certain) Continental. International airlines will also use the new terminal, e.g. British Airway, Lufthansa, KLM, Royal Jordanian. It was supposed to open this December, but NW didn't want any potential transition problems or bugs during the busy holiday season, so they pushed the opening up to January. Smart move ... They learned from Denver!

Essentailly, the present day DTW gate infrastructure will be completely gone soon, including the Berry International Terminal. And thank God for that! DTW will surely be the best of the best. The new terminal has over 90 gates, a "Vegas style" water fountain, a posh Westin hotel (to open later), an 11,000 space parking garage ... and lots of retail and restaurant space. There is also an additional runway that will open with the new terminal: Runway 22R/4L Now, Detroit has three sets of parelles: 21, 22, and 27 For all you spotters, the top of the new parking structure is going to be fantastic place for spotting movements on the 21 parellels ... great view!

I'm counter the days ... less than 5 months to go!  Smile woo hoo!

DTW's new Midfield Terminal is beautiful. I saw it in June while flying out of DTW. I dont know if COA is going to be there, but I got a NW Annual Report 2000 and it showed NWA, KLM, and COA planes parked at the Midfield Terminal. I dont like that old Davey Terminal.

Might be the first terminal out with scaled-down RJ mini-jetbridges from the get-go, and not added as an afterthought. Not sure if ATH's got 'em. (but then again, ATH doesn't really need 'em, either)

But, how much of this new terminal is Northwest's doing? In other words, what is the possibility that the new midfield terminal is more a product of civic hubris and Washington pork barrel, than of spectacular corporate planning on Northwest's part?

The reason I ask is that everywhere else Northwest has some of the most outmoded, inadequate, and dingy facilities of any major US Airline. Take their facilities at LAX, for example. There the ticketing concourse is probably the size of one of the bathrooms in the new DTW terminal. Their LAX facilities are an embarrassment, especially now that most of the wrappers have come off of AA's completely refurbished Terminal 4. (By the way, what at the new midfield terminal can match AA's "naked silver guys" on the floor of the new LAX Terminal 4?)

Against the backdrop provided by Northwest's new facilities at DTW, the remarkable difference in quality between Northwest's facilities at LAX and AA's points to one thing: Where the onus falls on each and every airline to make the improvements in their own terminals the have's will and the have not's won't.

In April I flew to Beijing and back on NWA through DTW and cound not believe the awful condition of that International terminal. After leaving Beijing's beautiful, new, airy and even friendly airport, it was like arriving in a third world country in DTW. I was even moved to write a letter to NW, who replied saying that the new terminal will be opened soon.

Now, if only the employees who work at DTW would be a little less rude to foreign visitors, the new terminal will be truly awesome.

I don't think Continental is going to be at the Midfield.

As for the Berry terminal, I heard that they WILL keep it for the charter carriers such as Sun Country, Allegro, ATA etc.

The International flights will go to Midfield such as British Airways, Lufthansa, KLM, Royal Jordanian and two rumored (yes I hate rumors)new carriers into DTW- Saudi Arabian and Air France.

Can you provide the source of those rumors? I wouldn't be at all surprised if Saudia started service to Detroit. The RJ flights are always packed during the summer. I think DTW is a very attractive, potential market for more foreign airlines. Alitalia was going to serve Rome, but somehow NW got a hold of that one.

I heard from a NW captain that the Berry International terminal will be torn down to make room for another hanger. ATA, Sun Country, and other charters don't operate enough flights to warrant their own terminal. We'll see what happens.

I do strongly feel that the curent terminal buildings are a disgrace to the city of Detroit and state of Michigan. For those of you who have not been to DTW, wait until the January to visit. I don't think an airport can get any uglier than the LC Smith temrinal. What a shit hole. It smacks of 1959 ... and looks like a bus station.
