Going through some of my old photos today I came across a few Champion Air shots. I've searched a few various sites and was surprised to see many have not been scrapped yet. Now, I did see one in particular - N696CA listed on another forum as being due for scrapping in Opa Locka in February. Has this happened yet? Does anyone know? Thanks

RIZJETS.NET says N696CA has been scrapped.
That was the last passenger 727 built.

Always have found it interesting how some planes get scrapped sooner then planes that might be older then the one that got scrapped first.
Weren't most sent to New Mexico to be stored for a good while?

There were a few at SBD but I haven't been there in quite a while to see if they are still there. I do know that about 2 years or so ago my wife and I were driving down I-15 through the Cajon Pass to Fontana and we saw a trailer that was pulling an ex Champion 722. It was the full fuselage minus the wings and tail. It was actually stopped at the scales on the Northbound 15. I have no idea where it went from there and it was dark enough that I couldn't catch a tail number.

I drove by the one in BUR last week. Still there, engines and all, in 1 piece. It's parked over by the gym and baseball place off San Fernando Road.
It really looked like you could just gas it up and go flying. Wake the neighbors up at 5 a.m. and all.

I know of only one Champion Aircraft in ROW. IIRC it was N688CA. It was scrapped 2 or 3 years ago. I believe there was one more their before that, which was also scrapped, but that was before I worked there. I left there at the end of 2007, and dont believe any more have been their since, atleast for storage or scrapping.
688 was had the entire interior removed, we did basic sotrage checks on it, and would rob parts for Champion when requested. It was a nice aircraft. But all 727's are nice to me.
I'm like a kid in a candy store when it comes to planes!

I remember seeing one in VQQ last year when I was there. It was pretty well stripped of parts, and I couldn't get a tail number. Looking at google maps you can see it in the over head view of the field, on the NW corner of the airfield, North of the Flightstar hangars, but in road view, its gone, so it may have been scrapped or moved.

Always have enjoyed the 727 myself as well.
What many people really do not know is it really was a favorite by many people!
However though this Airline was interesting in which towards the end I did start to wonder really when they might get a Boeing 737-800 or a Airbus 320? Nothing ever happened in the overall end.
Things shutdown and their aircraft really did go to different places with how I look I thought with one picture they might have been in New Mexico? But nope as it was just that one that got taken apart.
But yet take a look at North Carolina where there are still a ton of Northwest planes besides Phoenix. But yet then you see this odd duck sitting at a different airport you would never expect getting scrapped.
This is really interesting to me because what did really happen to the rest of those planes?
It's no different with United and Delta where they have more aircraft parked in other area's then Northwest has aircraft.
It's almost really like a game! Even though most of us could in general guess what really has happened to many of those aircraft with meeting the chopper.

They should put that in a museum unless parts have been disappearing. A piece of history with it's old colors is always something people like to see when it comes to avation.

AFAIR,It was in sad shape , and once a plane of that size lands in MAxton, the runway is too short to leave. I really have to get down there again.
