I thought I'd make sure that the many spotters who call San Diego home have their calendars marked for next Tuesday, March 13, as the Dreamliner will be visiting Lindbergh Field! Here's the link from the UT article dated 2/22:
http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2012/...ng-787-dreamliner-tour-sd-airport/

And here's one paragraph that might interest many folks, not even in San Diego, mentioning the current tour of the 787:

Quote:
This next leg begins March 1 in Toronto, followed by stops in Boston, Newark, Mexico City and Phoenix before landing in San Diego on March 13. After San Diego, the jet will visit Long Beach and Salt Lake City before heading to South America.

Length of her visit here nor times are mentioned but I assume there will be additional press on the event as the time nears. In any case, it looks like there will be a landing on the 13th and I imagine there will be a few photographers down at the end of 27 for the occasion...

Enjoy!

I am assuming it is going there because they designed (and built?) the APUs in San Diego by Hamilton Sundstrand.

If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

I have no idea how long the tour's SAN-stop has been scheduled , nor do I know the reason. I can't help but feel that the fact that JL just announced 787-service to our fair city is part of the reason, as well as the fact that San Diego is the ideal city and airport for such an airplane. Many locals expect we will see more flights to more intercontinental destinations in the future because a plane like this makes it possible!

And yes, San Diego certainly has a rich history of aircraft and aircraft-parts manufacturing as well as involvement in the development of avaiation (both civil and military.) So I'm not real surprised that Boeing has included a stop here.

I also note in the current edition of the article that unfortunately, tours of the Dreamliner by the public are apparently not going to happen. My guess is that this will be a fairly short visit with local airport folks and area VIPs allowed to see the plane and that's probably it.

Aerostructures business for Goodrich, the 787 partner that produces the Dreamliner's distinctive scalloped engine nacelles. Goodrich also provides fuel quantity indicating, proximity sensing, and cargo handling systems, as well as electric brakes.

Another 787 partner based in San Diego is Hamilton Sundstrand Power Systems, a division of United Technologies, who provides the Dreamliner's auxiliary power unit system. We're proud to share the 787 with invited employees of these two valued Boeing suppliers.

Can anyone find out what time the Dreamliner touches down? I want to get down there to see the arrival!

I expected that the tour was for VIPs, (invitation only), and support for the upcoming SAN-NRT flights. I just
want to see it in person! That's enough for me. I wonder if the green utility box will be crowded? I know it
most certainly will be when the first JAL 787 touches down at Lindbergh from Narita!

You mean, anyone ELSE??? Wouldn't surpise me a whole lot... BA is a prime candidate for the 2nd spot (behind JL in Dec.) to bring her here for future winter seasons if loads stay the way they are this (the first) winter; it looks like summer will probably remain the T7, load-wise. (Of course who knows what all the numbers were on the summer runs so the 787 could be a better fit yield-wise even in the peak season...)

What I'd really like to see is takeoff from SAN with a full payload and topped-off tanks! That's the real test for our little airport -in-a-salad bowl -- how she climbs up and over Pt Loma at MTOW!

Hey everyone, just wanted to give a heads-up and "warning" about the Dreamliner's visit to Lindbergh Field. Both SANMAN66 and I have been trying to keep an eye on things and all of a sudden there is some confusion about even the date of the visit.

Here'a a link to an article from last Thursday (March 8) saying the 787 will be at SAN's Landmark Aviation on MONDAY, MARCH 12, at 8 a.m! (And remember, that's Pacific DAYLIGHT Time!!)
http://www.stockmarketsreview.com/news/291810/

Apparently she is spending the weekend in PHX (where she arrived on Friday, Mar 9) and will now pop over to SAN Monday morning? Does that mean she may stay overnight and be here Tuesday also, or will she hop up the coast to LGB sometime on Monday? Has anybody got the scoop on what's actually happening? (There has been no recent information on the U/T website since late February...)

It would be great if we can get the correct story out to those of us interested, preferably BEFORE the landing takes place! Any updates or definite information would be most welcomed.

There's nothing on Flightaware that tracked the flight from MEX to PHX. It still shows ORD-MEX.
I want to be sure it's coming on March 12. Is there any other sites that is able to track the flight?

Someone nicely changed the title of the thread but I still have no idea if the date is correct or not. I've just checked the sites and articles I know about and what I posted in reply #11 still stands - both March 12 and 13 have now been given as the date of the visit to SAN. (The March 12 date is from a more recent article but...) Maybe it will be a 2-day visit (?) but I know a lot of people wanted to see (and record) the landing... and takeoff.

So, good luck friends. I hope someone is there (SANMAN66?) tomorrow morning in case that IS the correct date! Otherwise, I have no other information on the matter.

I'm with SANFan on this one. This is a marketing tour, not a thanks-guys-for-all-your-hard-work tour. I sense that San Diego is going to be a major benefactor of the 787 and that we are going to see a number of international non-stops open up once the plane makes it out of Everett.

The Dreamliner arrived on Friday at PHX and went directly to the FBO-Cutter Aviation. There were tours of the aircraft for employees of Honeywell (which has four major subsystems on the B787) and also a short media tour. The aircraft has been parked (and closed up) all weekend.

Here is a photo I shot on Sunday afternoon from the patio at Cutter Aviation.

The thing is, San Diego DOES have the traffic and IS a good, healthy market -- and it has been for a long time. We just had to wait for the airplane to exist that could tap into it because the #!>%*$ community could never make up its mind about a suitable airport that would have allowed these intercontinental routes years ago.

I look forward to reports from people who see the landing tomorrow morning; please keep us posted!
