Why Limited US Mainline Flights To YUL?

Hello,

I have question, I'm looking at YUL on wikipedia (yes I know it's not the most reliable but it is quick and easy info) and I noticed that YUL doesn't have many US based carriers flying mainline into the airport. The only carrier that flies mainline into YUL is AA, and I thought it would of been US/UA because of AC connections.

Does anyone know why there aren't that many mainline US airlines flying to YUL?

I'm guessing that there are a couple of factors in play here: demand and frequency.

I don't see much demand between most hubs in the US and destinations in Quebec (outside of YUL) or most places in the Maritimes, and at this point YUL is still primarily a hub to Quebec and the Maritimes (though AC's European route development may change this)

Further, most of the US destinations served from YUL are close enough that an acceptable frequency is only achievable with regional operations (ie. NYC, WAS, PHL, CLE, BOS, etc.)

Of those destinations that are far enough to get mainline service, the service is provided by AC (DEN, LAX, LAS) or by multiple airlines to Florida (TS, WS, AC, WG)

Interestingly, other than ORD and LAX, none of the US hubs with regional service to YUL have mainline service on an american carrier to YYZ! So I'm guessing that the desire for more frequencies than are sustainable with mainline aircraft is the biggest reason that YUL sees so little mainline from the US.

This is probably the big factor. USAirways was operating Mainline to YUL and YYZ for a long time, and I notice that they just recently ended mainline service to both CLT and PHL, which is very interesting. The reason AA is still mainline is because DFW and MIA are both long flights for an ERJ or even a CRJ 700 out of YUL, so those are Mainline flights. Also those maritime provinces you speak of as well as Quebec. UA serves them all from EWR, US now serves YHZ and YQB from PHL, and the other two airlines would not be good options for connections in YUL anyways.

The other thing to remember is that airlines who would be likely to fly mainline on these routes (B6 and WN), do not serve Canada at all, so basically its left to legacy carriers to operate the flights.
