While searching for some WN flights, I was offered a connection in BWI and realized that WN is operating SEA-BWI starting in April. First flight appears to be April 10th. Is this new or did I miss something?

At least according to this USA Today article FL was planning to start service June 3rd. Although it is from McPaper, it was only published a month ago.

April is Spring Break for Seattle-area K-12 schools, but most people seem to head for the beach, Arizona, etc. No offense to Maryland (I've always enjoyed my visits), but I don't see it as a vacation spot for those of us out here.

Anyone have more information?

It's a good route for business traffic though. Both huge markets. WN clearly is not chasing leisure traffic here.

FL ran this route last year, I flew on it BWI-SEA.

Personally, I'd stick with AS DCA-SEA. Similar equipment but better seats if it's FL metal.

This route which is one of the longest in the FL system usually ran with the planes with the updated interior for FL. The seats on FL are wider the cushioning on the refreshed FL 737's are leather and are loads softer then there predeccesor seats. But AS is a great airline.   I believe sidebar that FL will start up BWI-lax and BWi-sfo as they normally do during the summer.

I imagine this route will be a seasonal route, like SEA-BNA or SEA-MCI?

I just can't imagine flying WN on a 5+ hour flight. Don't know why it sounds any more unappealing than flying anyone else...it just does.

Next trip...DL RJ SEA-LAX/AM LAX-MEX Dec 23

I think WN still flies SAN-BWI nonstop and WN once had LAX-BWI nonstop and I think OAK-BWI nonstop. If you think that's perceived as bad, wait until they start flying to Hawaii.

Fill me in here.. why is flying WN on a transcon so bad compared to the other LCC's like AS, VX or B6?

..sick of it. -K. Pilkington.

Meals for purchase, premium cabins on AS and VX IFE on VX and B6 and AS. AS VX and B6 products are much more longhaul friendly then WN however WN is constantly evolving there product with the new interiors and snacks and expanding row44 fleet wide so soon whole product wide WN will be able to compete much more effectively with AS VX etc on those 4 plus hour flights.

WN is also putting in new seats on all their planes that cut the seat pitch from 32" to 31" - meaning a tighter squeeze (although WN claims you will not lose any personal space because of the way the new seats recline). On the other hand, AS and VX both offer 32" pitch while B6 offers a very roomy 34" pitch.

It's not a tighter squeeze. The seats curve where your knees are so you don't lose any legroom. I sat in the new seat and thought it was very comfortable. I didn't notice any difference in legroom.

WN to me has comfortable seats.

FL on the other hand.. sometimes I feel like I'm sitting on a wooden board. Glad their newer seats are better.

While not exactly exotic, BWI serves as a popular gateway for middle and high school student groups on educational trips to DC during the springtime. There were about 40 8th graders on my SFO-BWI (UA 226; picked the right flight to burn a F class upgrade) redeye last Saturday night (don't know if WN services these groups). FWIW, temps here have been in the 70s and 80s for the better part of a week and are expected to continue that way for at least the next several days.

BWI-OAK is 33nm longer than OAK-HNL, with the latter being shorter due to not heading directly west (essentially). Unless you're just talking about the perception of WN over nothing but the Pacific for more or less five hours. So long as I'm at the window, sign me up - but I'd rather take a UA or HA widebody.

This isn't the only long(ish) range Seattle route WN will be starting.

Since when was AS considered a LCC???

B6 offers a very roomy 34" pitch.

Pay another few dollars and you can get 36 inches up front.

I was aiming at perception. Really the only thing that's missing between airlines like AS, FL and WN is the lack of meal options. More and more airlines are using 737's and A32X's transcon and over to Hawaii. Count your blessings that there are still widebody service to Hawaii because it had been shrinking fast.

Tell me about it. Flew LAX-HNL and HNL-SFO earlier this month on UA and had to actually look to find a r/t itinerary with just 767/777 on it. I couldn't care less about the size of the aircraft - it's the 2/3/2 or 2/5/2 config I want on a flight that long, especially when traveling as a pair (as I was).

If the price is right, any carrier can fill the seats without regard to seat comfort, amenities, or times.

I don't know why blessings wear disguises. If I were a blessing, I'd run around nude!

Also doesn't this rout come and go with some regularity?
