Does anyone know how NK is doing in AZA? Are any future routes possible for them at AZA?

About the only thing I can say is the flight I took on NK to LAS was full last month. Was a Thursday flight as well. So was the G4 flight on the return. I really liked the travel experience I had in and out of AZA and hope they do expand to give me more options. I just hope that they coordinate away from G4 schedule to keep the terminal crowd down. The TSA people there told me it can get hectic.

If the airlines at that airport can coordinate their schedules as not to crowd up the place I think there is a big growth opportunity. The twenty min longer drive for me to AZA vs PHX is more than worth it as far as cost and convenience gained at AZA.

Is there a new terminal that was constructed? I live far from AZA and I've been out of the loop from developments there

The master plan calls for a new terminal to be built on the east side of the airport...Airport is growing so fast that they might have to break ground sooner than thought before...if money allows it....They opened a newer terminal building October of 2010 where they added to new gates and a new baggage claim area..Now they are adding another two gates and what seems to be like a bigger a rental car lot. I think after this expansion is done that is it for possible expanding unless they build east.

What other airlines could go to AZA? The rumored California Pacific may, F9 was rumored to move out there but never happend, B6 was rumored to move out there. WN and HA were also rumored to start up operations at AZA...

- Could see California Pacific flying there if they do fly
- F9 who knows what they will do
- Maybe PeopleExpress if they start flying down the track
- B6 isn't that likely
- WN not likely
- HA not likely

F9 is gamble, adding a PHX-COS flight, cutting PHX-MKE. Who knows with their new business model they may just close up shop at PHX and move to AZA to be with other ultra low cost carriers.

PeopleExpress, I could see them setting up shop at AZA going to the north east. Maybe just maybe....

B6 they are doing ok in PHX

WN I do not think would ever consider moving to AZA, gate space would be a big issue plus their hub at PHX which is less than 30 miles away.

HA, HA is staying in PHX. Why? gate space, I do not think the current terminal could handle a widebody and interlineing with other airlines...

With US, WN, DL, UA, and AA flying to LAX (plus other LA area airports, in the case of US and WN) there is more than enough capacity between Los Angeles and Phoenix. I just don't see the need for AZA service. Plus whose banner would it fly under DL, US, UA, or AS? One of those airlines would have to sign off on it first.

Looking at what is available from AZA, it seems that the only "real" airports that it has flights to with any chance of connects is LAS, and DFW, both with NK. And per there own decision (if one can observe this as such) - NK is 90% O&D driven. There is no LAX, DEN, SLC, IAH, ATL, ORD, etc. to/from AZA, and they could possibly use a few more of these types of flights to become more of a full-fledged airport. With what airlines is anyone's guess? All the airport is really doing right now (and this is not a criticism, just an observation to doing what it has to do to make itself working, and mostly finding itself as a niche airport) is bringing in tourists to the Phoenix area via G4, and these are from the smaller cities of the West and Midwest.

I think that this data will show up with the DOT, but their last stats are as of Q3, 2011. NK started at AZA in February of 2012 I do believe, so it may be some time before there's really any actual official information here, maybe into the fall of 2012?

I would say that, but AZA is a "hub" for G4 so that is why the airport is maxed out

I would love to see HA fly out of AZA, but I would doubt that WN or HA would leave PHX. WN has such a large presence at PHX that I do not see it happening unless they would get a screaming deal and they could then use AZA as a secondary/east valley airport.

Quoting bjorn14 (Reply 7):

Yes, Their terminal is tiny and is going to be built as new airlines come on board.

What I am surprised to see is that there is not a movement of UPS, DHL and FedEx to AZA as they have the three parallel runways and they are less than a mile away from the 202. The traffic is much lighter and they could build a huge western transfer facilities.

I am also wondering if another aircraft manufacture will move to AZA like Cessna and Lockheed-Matrin? I also wonder it an airline like Virgin American would come into AZA?

I flew out of AZA last Friday morning (around 6:30am). The lines were about 15 to 20 feet from reaching the door. In fact, they would not allow me to stand in line to check in because they were prioritizing people based on departure times. There are times at AZA where there is ample room, but at peak travel times, it gets very crowded.

I highly doubt, Virgin America* would come to AZA because they aren't are a "fashionable" airline. They don't see the point of flying to a cheaper airport. Also, I doubt the whole PHX/AZA area demands a premium airline like VX, on top of all the legacies that fly the route. Also, they really don't focus on short distance flights like SFO-AZA or LAX-AZA.

Fully agree. It doesn't fit their model, or mindset, at this stage.

Never say never about PHX. It may well become on their radar, especially with more aircraft due over the next few years. They have to go somewhere

The airport's near term plan is one concourse. The longer term plan is to expand to a total of 3 concourses. However, based on the diagram, it looks like it could be expanded to a total of 7 concourses. I cannot tell how many gates are on each concourse, but I am estimating based on the drawing that there are at least 6 to 8 gates per concourse.

Below is a link to the airport's master plan with diagrams/maps.

I would love to see cargo airlines out at AZA. AZA would be a prime cargo airport because any type of aircraft can land there and all the open land and old buildings from the military to set up a warehouse. The cargo area can handle up to two 747s at once on the ramp...One day hopefully.

Does anybody honestly feasibly see AZA expanding this far? Seems like a bit too much IMO

Seven concourses is a lot, but for planning purposes, you need a longer term plan. I can easily foresee 2 to 3 concourses in the mid term.

Keep in mind that there are currently 6 gates at IWA with 2 more opening this fall. The airport estimates that they will be at capacity almost immediately once the additional 2 gates open.

Assuming 8 gates per concourse (based on the artists drawings), the airport would need at least one concourse just to handle the amount of traffic today. Then you would need to factor in any additional increase in traffic between now and the time the east terminal opens. Therefore, I think two concourses are not out of the question when the new East terminal opens.

In the near future? No I do not because of the expansion projects that the current terminal has undergone. I would be a waste of money and space not getting a good life out of these buildings. Overtime? Yes, I do see this terminal being built to help further growth but only time will tell with what next airline will start service to AZA.

I was told on time by an colleague that works for an airline and lives not too far from IWA that when Amazon opened its large warehouse operation in PHX, there were talks about greatly expanding IWA into a cargo hub for FedEX to handle all the volume Amazon would generate. Never panned out.

That was probably doomed by the price of land in the east valley vs the west valley. I could still see FedEx or UPS building a western transfer site here as you almost never have weather issues, Long enough to handle most, if not all, freighters, Away from a busy commercial airport.

The biggest stumbleing block would be the night arrivals and departures and the NIMBY folks.

Interesting comparison on the runways from PHX to AZA

PHX

25R/7L 10,300ft
25L/7R 7,800ft

AZA/IWA
30R/12L - 9,300ft
30C/12C - 10,201ft
30L/12R - 10,401ft
