United FA Manual In The 60ies

Long story short, a consultant and I had a long chat today. Hes old school and I guess I'm one of the few that enjoy listening to old school stories about aviation so whenever hes in town we have a dozen or so lagers and chat away.

We often speak about aviation and he always refer to the good old days, days I wasn't around to experience. he used to be in a very very senior position at United. Anyway, last time we met he told me about the requirements of United Fa's back then and how it made flying glamorous. These days he is of the opinion that any fat and unfit person is an FA so customers treat airlines as McDonalds.

Anyway this he brought me the manuals from what Fa's had to look like in the late sixties. Very clear guidelines of height to weight ratio (pls bring back that), colour of lipstick, make up, manners, how hair should be tied up etc etc etc. Stricter rules than the gulf airlines have today.

Obviously looks and height-weight ratio isn't important at American airlines anymore so when did this disappear?

(Anyone what a retro feeling of Fa's do fly with Indigo of India, their FA feels like right out of AF 1967. Awesome look and good manners)

I have a Pan Am Flight Service Manual from 1977. Interesting read... Though I don't recall grooming issues

Announcements, f/a working positions, emergency procedures , meal service etc.

Would love to expand my collection!

I have a service manual with CO when we had the DC-10, 747 and had ordered the A330/A340. How's that for nostalgia. Also, the manual we now carry at the new UA should be considered a carry-on, in its own right.
