Future Of YMM? (Flights & Infrastructure)

Hello all,

I've been contemplating a move to Fort McMurray for work. Naturally as an a.netter, a big factor I'm considering is the availability and cost of flights 'out', both to see family in Eastern Canada or just to connect to vacation destinations, etc. I knew little about the airport until reading about it today. Seems it's way over capacity already and has a fairly short runway. Airfares don't seem too bad there, although considerably more than other flights of similar distance where there is perhaps a little less money at play.

So, a few questions?

1) Any prospects for new flights? Perhaps competition from WS against Air Canada's daily E90 to YYZ? Or a flight to Vancouver? I imagine more flights would be better for pricing.

2) Given the above-mentioned limits of capacity for the airport, are there good prospects for expansion of the airport? Is this difficult to plan given the boom-and-bust nature of the oil economy? And, in turn, would expansion change the answers much to question #1?

Glad to hear your thoughts.

JL

p.s. I was going to include some recent pictures in this thread, but it appears there is no a.net picture from YMM more recent than 2007!

Next flight.... who knows.

I'm not too sure about airline expansion, but as far as airfield expansion goes:

Looks like a new terminal on the south side of the airfield along with some industrial development. It's not clear when they are planning to start construction, it probably has a lot to do with the cyclical nature of business at YMM that you mentioned.

Radial engines don't leak oil, they are just marking their territory!

Embarrasingly, I found the updates about the new terminal construction just after I had posted. Looks like the 'ground' works (utilities, ramp construction, etc.) are well under way, but not the terminal itself as far as I can tell.

It looks like it will be about a YQR-sized terminal, which seems appropriate. Should be a lot nicer than what is available now, which seems more like a YHM-level facility.

Looks like this summer AC will have 2x daily YMM-YYZ, both flights being A319s, including a redeye.

Or a flight to Vancouver?

AC also has a daily CRJ to YVR, at least in the summer schedule.

We've had a daily YVR-YMM on the CRJ for a few years now... Since Summer '09, I believe!

Last Flight(s): YHZ-YYZ-YHZ.....Next Flight(s): YHZ-YYZ-IAH // IAH-SEA-YYJ // YYJ-YYZ-YHZ

I think he meant WS competition. You never know where those Q400's will end up!

I have not had occasion to fly there yet, but generally "oil routes" generate higher ticket prices. A lot of the folk I know there have their air fares paid for leave back to their home towns, or they are at least compensated accordingly, so you should look into that.
