Any Aircrafts Upgraded To UK For The Olympics

Just thought it would be interesting to know if any airlines have upgraded their aircrafts to the UK around the olympic times. I can imagine London Airports will be very busy and will any airport outside London benefit?

There is so much traffic into London every day anyways, I expect that mostly the prices will be so high that the normal people don't fly. I assume the big London airlines, Easyjet, Ryanair and BA, will mostly try to get a high profit from this, not a high number of passengers.

Then there are the typical charter operators, they will do a few flights like for any other big sports event.

Less than many hope.

European services will actually reduce as will traffic in the London TMA.

There will be lots of Biz traffic to the likes of Farnborough/ Biggin Hill / Luton .

There will also be a few exotic visitors delivering teams for sure - they may well go to Stansted or even some of the regional airports where the team training camps are being located.

Stansted will also get some team cargo flights - horses etc....

For sure QF has a flight into Manchester in July.

Fact is from a ticketing perspective most are offered domestically.

As far as I can tell, reading the various reports, any increase in Olympic inbound traffic will be offset by a reduction in inbound tourism and business travel (it is a quiet time of year for business anyway).

There are suggestions that the travel increase will actually be in outbound tourism (Brits going away to avoid the Olympic period) but this is annecdotal and may not actually be true.

In any event, I don't see much change in the normal flight schedule happening.

And Heathrow Airport Ltd is building a special terminal at LHR to handle outsize objects like canoes, yachts, firearms etc. So will we see any 5X aircraft at LHR?.

Heathrow Airport Ltd have also already constructed what they call the "Exodus" trerminal to handle the rush of competitors flying home after the closing ceremonies.

I am guessing that if there are two temporary structures a tLHR to handle increased business the suggestion that there will be less or only 'normal' flights could be flawed. I mean how do you get all those athletes away after both the Olympic and Paralympic closing ceremonies without some change in flights?

Short answer NO,
Some time 2013 earliest for first and not until 2015 before they have enough for a flexible fleet and scheduled.

I think the departure day/days are concentrated where as arrivals are over several weeks and as said many training camps are located outside London so the teams will arrive in dribs and drabs.
Many athletes will have LEFT before departure day, and whilst UPS are dedicated small package carrier still can't get my head round cargo through Heathrow when Stansted is a straight run up the M11 and a UPS Hub !

Nevertheless Heathrow Airport Ltd are predicting that on 13 August they will break all passengrer number records. On the same day they expect to handle 218,000 bags or more than 36 per cent more than the 160,000 handled on a "normal" day. Heathrow Airport talk of the "athletes, officials, sponsors, media and spectators" who, presumably in addition to some more regular passengers, are expected to contribute to the total number of bags.

The answer here is that Heathrow Airport Ltd is a Tier 3 Sponsor of theLondon 2012 Olympiv and Paralympic Games and Stansted Airport Ltd is not. So all official Olympic and Paralympic Games flights will use Heathrow Airport.

The Games introduces challenges not experienced in the usual day-to-day business of British airports. These include the temporary importation of literally hundreds or, possibly, thousands of firearms. This and the arrival of outsized sporting equipment creates the need for a special freight terminla. if Olympic and Paralympic travel was not concentrated at one airport the investment in these facilities would never have been made. This would have potentially resulted in chaos.

Some A320 will be upgrade to A321. I could imagine LH to upgrade from A321 to A333 for departure day.
Many teams will fly charter aircraft, So Air Pullmanntur etc will be seen at Heathrow. Great days for spotters.

Thats a good observation and i suppose needs special considerations /exceptional wavers of the hand gun regulations.

A very good reason for separation of athletes from regular travellers.

The IOC dignitaries will probably NOT fly through LHR more rather Northolt and Heli shuttles.

Don't agree that arrivals/departures need to be concentrated through a single Hub on the WRONG side of town for this event.

That said LOGOC and the ODA have vested interests throughout.

The best one can hope for is that Airbus might do a flyover with one of their A380's painted in BA colours. But not any passenger service.

BAA own both.

STN is likely to see some additional traffic. Unofficial charter flights including those brininging the larger teams of competitors like those from the USA and Australia, are not official ~Olympic flights and are likely to use STN

T5 LHR- which is on the wrong side of the airport for the village and therefore further from it than the other and the temporary terminals - is about three miles closer by road to the Olympic Park than is STN. The special lanes in London will link to the reserved lane along most of the M4 between LHR and the elevated section. This prepared route runs M4, A4, A1203 to link to the A12 East Cross Route and thus directly to the Olympic Park.

That matches my understanding that the Olympic airport challenge is not the number of pax but rather their baggage. This may result in larger aircraft being scheduled (and as an enthusiast it would be nice) but it doesn't seem certain to happen.
