AeroGal will discontinue its daily GYE-JFK service on April 17 and exit the U.S. market. The airline will also slash domestic flights with-in Ecuador. Over 100 Aerogal employees will be laid off as the airline "restructures" its network.

What ever happened to Aerogal flights to Miami ? They fly to JFK with a 767, Miami could be flown with an A320 from Ecuador. Flying to New York and not Miami sounds like a ego excercise, first Aerosur and now bad news at Aerogal, where is Avianca ? Staying away from the bad news that plagued the "old" Avianca.

AeroGal's flights between Ecuador and MIA were never successful; especially since 2K was competing with two other carriers. Also, AeroGal no longer operates any wide-body a/c. The GYE-JFK route operates with the A-319.

Did they already do a round of layoffs after the fuel subsidy went away?

Apparently these layoffs are very recent. According to some sources, as many as 120 employees will or have already been laid off.

sp Aerogal is doing the same as did LAN some weeks / months ago in Ecuador?

I am wondering why this is happening at all, is their to mucho competition in the Ecuadorian airline sector?

Now I also understand why an Aergal 767-300 is sitting in MDE at least since 3 weeks.

AeroGal does not operate as many intercontinental flights as LAN Ecuador. LAN Ecuador did not lay off nearly as many employees as 2K. LAN Ecuador is basically dropping 4 weekly frequencies to MIA by closing the GYE-MIA route. MIA-UIO returns to a daily service this month, GYE-JFK will increase from 6x weekly back to a daily service soon and GYE-MAD continues to operate daily. Both GYE-LIM and GYE-SCL operate as daily services, and the UIO-GYE-EZE route operates 5x weekly. Also, LAN Ecuador is still the dominant carrier on the UIO-GYE route.

anyhow LAN is not doing good as well, also laying off employees is never a good sign.

as per my understanding GYE-JFK gets a good load originating from LIM at least the lower yield business.

I thinks it is a matter of time that Aerogal will get more international flights, maybe to MAD!? with the A330

LAN is doing well in Ecuador. Especially since LAN's other affiliates and alliance partners operate into UIO/GYE; including LAN Cargo and its affiliates.

so does Tampa, Avianca and Taca (and not only from LIMA) in case of Aerogal.

Dont get me wrong, you are even on my respected user list, but its not correct to bash Aerogal, and some weeks ago when LAN Ecuador had to do the same you didnt gave any mayor post - not even do mentioned a dedicated topic.

If we bash, than lets bash all...

Cheers
Avianca

There was a thread about LAN Ecuador a while back and I'm not bashing Aerogal. LAN Ecuador simply reduced its head count and decreased certain flights in order to increase its yields. However, most people forget that LAN has a major cargo presence in Ecuador and even operates the B777Fs into UIO. With Aerogal dropping GYE-JFK, LAN Ecuador will obviously benefit since it will be the only carrier on the route.

well they have to bring back the B.777F from south southamerica to MIA / AMS, so naturally.... they are flying the aircaraft into LIM, UIO and BOG...

On a much larger scale and also discontinuing its only intercontinental route; which IMO is very significant.

It's UIO-BOG-MIA-AMS.

Not really, it is the first major international, intercontinental flight for the carrier whose footprint was very small in a small, poor country--these things almost never work. LA meanwhile has a much larger network to back it up, and plenty of places to flow traffic over UIO/GYE. If/when TA/AV integrate and grow 2K further, they could be in a similar position to succeed with longer int'l flights.

Which is easy if you have a contract for transporting flowers to AMS.

Apologies, but a bit confused by the 'if and when' comment. We were all under the impression that AV, TA, LR, 2K, T0 and even O6 [which is not owned directly by AviancaTACA, but by Synergy SA, which is the largest single shareholder of AviancaTACA] would integrate their commercial, marketing and technical operations.

LA operates numerous regional subsidiaries and the belief was AV would replicate this strategy throughout South America and Central America. Is there any doubt whatsoever that AV will fail to integrate its regional affiliates in El Salvador, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Peru and even Brasil [O6]? Why would AV merge with TA unless it wished to realize commercial efficiency associated with a full operational integration?

AeroGal is simply one piece of AV's strategy in one Andean nation, Ecuador. One would assume the objective would be to fully integrate all operations and offer full regional capabilities.
