Hi everyone,

I have read in several (old) articles that Avianca-TACA and Copa Airlines will join Star Alliance in April 2012. However, nothing has been heard about it for several months.

Is there a date set for they to join Star? Is the April 2012 set date still valid, or has it been postponed?

Thanks in advance for your information and comments.

I've been wondering the same for ages. I've been trying to book AVTaca flights as part Star Alliance itineraries and it appears April won't be the date they join.

I read a more recent article that simply states the airlines will join Star Alliance in mid 2012.

I hope some of the other Colombians here have some more info.

I'd be interested to know as well. Last I read it was mid-April 2012 but I gather we'd have heard something about that if it was still happening.

When they were originally announced in November 2010 as future members the original press release

http://www.staralliance.com/en/press/cmavta-prp/

stated:

The integration teams from Star Alliance, Avianca-TACA, Copa Airlines and the respective mentor carriers, Lufthansa and Continental, will now begin their work in order to achieve integration of both airline groups by mid 2012.

Later there was talk of April from quite a few sources, but none of them ( as far as I am aware) were 'official'.

Bearing in mind that there is still a chance ( microscopic in my opinion, but nevertheless, still a chance) that LATAM could select Star rather than OW I would think that Star will hold off on AV/TA as long as possible in case of a miracle coming out of Santiago. Once AV/TA are in Star then JJ has to leave under the conditions applied for approval of the takeover by LAN.

Indeed, although may sources quoted the Copa CEO giving the April 2012 date, which is why I was expecting them to join this month.

Very good point, I would not be surprised that Star is in fact waiting to see what happens with JJ. They have announced that they will complete the merger with LA in May, and that they will (need to?) take a decision on alliance shorty thereafter, so maybe Avianca-TACA or Copa will join in June, July or August (if JJ does go oneworld, that is).

The month of April is not over yet so if CM announcement is coming this month, lets keep waiting.
That means It's quite likely that CM actually will become Star Alliance member before TA/AV.

I'm not on CM's payroll.

That's true, technically there is nothing that makes them joing together with Avianca-TACA. However, I think that perhaps Star Alliance wants them to join at once to magnify the PR effect, although conceededly the contrary could also be argued, as two smaller PR stunts may be better than one big one in the eyes of some marketing people.

Don't forget that Copa isn't affected by what happens with LATAM, only Avianca-TACA.

As I said, I think the chances of LATAM choosing *A are microscopic, especially since JK bellied up depriving *A of a partner based in Spain, however, there is a small chance that LAN will look at JJ's books and see a huge contribution from *A membership ( not sure how that would be quantified).

That wouldn't surprise me at all, I was under the impression what CO was very close with CM, now CO is UA, and the planes still look alike. I was surprised about AV, and hope that TA does make it in, *A needs to try and compete with O/W in S. America.
